Excessive head and face sweating

Posted , 301 users are following.

I am 63 and for the last 22 years have suffered with excessive sweating on my head and face, which seems to be getting worse.  This is uncomfortable and embarrassing.  If I do anything even slightly energetic (hoovering, ironing etc.) it is worse, and it takes a long time for me to cool down.  I was referred to a dermatologist who prescribed pills, which just dried up my eyes (red, sore and bloodshot within 30 mins) and mouth (making it impossible to eat or even speak).  She point blank refused to consider any other treatment, even telling me botox does not work for the face, which i know is untrue.  This condition, to other people, seems trivial but it is not.  In the summer I cannot go outside, so I can't even play with my grandchildren.  I certainly couldn't go out shopping or to a social event, the sweat drips off me and my hair is drenched within minutes.  I obviously cannot use make-up, or even have a decent hairstyle, which zaps the confidence.  I do have a thyroid problem but that is well controlled.  I am a little overweight but not much.  I have other non-related medical conditions (arthritis, fibromyalgia).  Has anyone any experience of the new gadget around which includes a mask for the face, plugged into a machine - sorry I can't remember the name of it.  I know they are very expensive but I am desperate.  Any helpful tips would be great.  Thank you.

      Hi Chickybeading,

i usually get get the sweats, when I exert myself in any way and also when I am really concentrating on something. And yes I do get the chills, because I am wet through.

No sore throats,  after a big sweat, it zaps my energy for a few hours.

      Kind regards Maureen

Hi there...I know this is an older thread, but i just found it. I honestly thought I was the only one...I'm the only one that looks like me that I know at least. It is embarraassing....in fact just the other day, our realtor stopped by without notice (which I hate bc of this very reason and that is sad), I had been vacuuming the living room before she rang the bell so of course I was literally drenched...I keep my house at like 65 degrees which always gets comments from people as well and makes my family crazy...but when I saw her at the door I panicked and grabbed a towel, wiped my face and neck off real quick and then put it on my head as if I had been in the shower and was just getting dressed...I answered the door like that so it would look like I just hopped out of the shower and that was why my hair was soaked! Usually I do not have an odor unless I have been sweatting consistantly for several hours... I take cool showers a couple times a day whenever possible.

I have been sufferng from pretty much everthing that everyone else does. it is the worst! life changing and not in a good way of course..I am so tired of it. can't even grocery shop in an air conditioned store...or vaccum my house even though I keep the AC on 65!

I do have severe nerve damage...in my back, ribs and thorasic area...basiclly wearing a bra is literally the most painful thing I do all day..it is torture. Sleeping is out of the question most nights, sittig/laying in certian positions is horrible, breathing is painful..I have been to the ER a few times with suspected heart attack and it ends up being this pain. I do take Gabapentin 1800mg per day and that makes SOME days livable but most are not. That is the only medication I am on, I also had a full hystrectomy a couple years ago...I had this sweating issue before that, but it has gotten worse for sure.  Doctors dismiss me every single time! They say...get in better shape..(I am not obese by any means, until the past 6 months I was never really more than 20 pounds over my ideal weight. Past few months I have gained, mainly due to my pain level bc that affects activity as well as eating to be honest bc I just depressed and i so much pain) I have tried anti depressents in the past but most have a side effect of nausea and I also suffer from vertigo. Doctors usually just blow this question off when I ask it...like I am exaggerating or whatever...like why in the heck would anyone make this up? Its not like we are drug searching for some "good drugs!" lol....people stare at me in public like I'm a freak...I usually just make some "whew! darn menopause!" comment or something...but I know its not that either. I am 45 years old, have no night sweats and had this for 10 years.

I am glad to have found this thread...even though its older, i am hoping some of you post updates. I had never heard of the mentioned medications before so I will be checking those out as well. Its just nice to not feel so alone!

Looks like we are all in the same boat, as I too take gabapentin 600 morning 600mg afternoon and 900 bedtime. I take for pain managment due to my Fybro. You are having trouble with nerves which Fibro causes as well, so I'll bet that's the cause, but just curious as to what would bring it on if nothing else. Girls, do try slushy ice. If you can afford one of those blenders for just over 300 at Costco's as what I have. I make ice like a slush and pour just enough crystal lite over ice which I eat with spoon to taste. By the time I'm done with 20 oz. glass I feel so much better. I literately freeze my husband out of the house and during summer utility bill so high as must have the air on constantly being set at 68-69 normally. Also have fan going over the bed when sleeping. Just a thought for all of you as may help you as it does me with the sweating. Would be nice that we didn't, but not sure we'll be able to stop it. We all seem to have same symptons pretty much. I can't vacumn so rid of all carpets to laminating and tile floors. Much easier on me, but still sweat when doing them and have to take a break.

I hope your still a member to this site. I read your artical about the sweating of head, face, etc.. I have the same identical experience problem. Dermatologists tell me the only thing that could help is Botox. My ins does not cover this st all and way too expensive to do myself. I will be 63 in August and have had this problem going on 13 yrs. have you by chance found any relief? I don't have all that much time left on this earth, and really don't want to spend anymore time in the house in the summer. Thank you for any help you can give me.. I'm so sorry this is happening to you also. Blessings..

    Hi gill22568

Was on internet as have been meaning to look up what makes a person sweat when hardly doing anything, and the only thing which cools me down is slushy ice which I make from a Blender type item bought at Costco's. Cools me down quickly, otherwise I am just so hot all the time. Anyway, it was great to run into your story, as seen you too have Fibro. Now, I'm thinking this is the cause as it is for so many other things that's happened to me in the last 23 years. Just wish we could do something to prevent it from happening, but pills are out as with all my medical issues some inherited and some not, do not want to take anything else. So many already. Appreciate your story though, as helped me recognize what it may be that is causing us to sweat as we do. We will be the same age soon as birthday coming up May 1st. :-) And looks like it's been for about the same time length as well. I'll have to do some more digging up on this subject with Fibro and see if I can locate anything when I have time to do so or feel up to searching. Thanks again, and God Bless!

I am a 52 year old male living in the United States in Florida. This condition is debilitating for me. It affects my work and my social life. I can sweat even in the air conditioning. Slight stress, heat & humidity, physical exertion, ANYTHING makes my gush like a lawn sprinkler. I have to wear a hard hat and safety glasses in at work and this conditions makes me miserable. They think I am weak and lack physical stamina. That is not the case at all. I am in great physical condition for a man my age. We have to pay out of pocket here in the states for anything we do.Going to the doctor is like spinning a roulette wheel. My medical insurance (ponzi scheme) doesn't kick in until later next month on this new job.  (the ability to seek medical attention is related to your employer here) I plan to see the doctor and beg for Oxybutynin. I will try botox if my insurance will pay for it. I will keep you all posted. Say a prayer of us here. We have absolutely no say in how our government or healthcare system works. We are at the mercy of companies and profiteers. If I get this medication I will report back on the results.

My hyperhydrosis began as an adult and is a genetic trait my father has. Once the sweat starts it is a postive reinforced metabolic process. It starts with a trickle and ends in a shower. I am in fear that it will get me fired from my job.  Here, they can fire you for any reason whatsoever. I am in one heckava jam over here across the pond. I am looking for a way out. But I have to have the money to do it and they will not let of any of it. Only enough to barely pay your rent and that's it. Oxybutynin is giving me hope. Changing 4 dozen sopping wet bandanas ain't cutting it anymore and I am sick of this.

Please let me know about your experience with Oxybutynin and I will do the same.

Hi Jake, I tried the Oxy..... it did seem to make the sweats less severe, BUT I was like a Zombie all I wanted to do was sleep, couldn't concentrate, blurred vision at times...... I had to stop it.

My next step is making an appointment with a dermatologist to see if there is any advice from them.......we will see.

I have these stinking sweats for more than 25 years and it seems, the older I get the more severe they get.😥

I'm so glad I've found this discussion!  I'm 57 and have been "over heated" for as long as I can remember.  Even as a young teen my mum used to say my thermostat was faulty smile  Over the past fews years things have got so much worse and I break out in a sweat, mainly on my head/face, at the slightest activity, or even no activity.  It's not really hot flashes/flushes but things have definitely got worse over the past 5 years or so.  I am constantly taking off and putting on a light hoodie/cardigan all day long.  I just can't seem to regulate my body warmth.  I've been struggling to find a doctor who can help me with this but have a couple of appointments over the next couple of days with dermatologists who deal with this.  I'm going to make a note of the medicine that a couple of people have mentioned.  I have hypothyroidism which is controlled and I take an anti-depressent/anti-anxiety that usually helps people with hot flashes but hasn't made any difference to me.

I'm so glad to see that I'm not alone!  I don't know anyone else who sweats like I do.  It's one thing to sweat when I'm working out, but I look around waiting rooms or meetings, for example, and people are in jackets, sweaters, etc. and I'm in short sleeves mopping my brow/face and fanning myself.

    Thank you!

I take cymbalta and my MD. Said the sweating was probably a side effect. I'm not convinced. If I take a klonopin .5mg I get 2 hours of no sweat. Buthe I've heard that the oxybutynin dries everything and can make you very uncomfortable. Have you tried any other medications?

I am 57 also and it sounds like i am exactly like you.  I always said my inner thermostat was set on bust. Debilitating for me. My head always has so much heat eminating from it. If you find a cure, please share. I m not living a good quality of life because of this problem.  Thanks.
