Excessive head and face sweating

Posted , 301 users are following.

I am 63 and for the last 22 years have suffered with excessive sweating on my head and face, which seems to be getting worse.  This is uncomfortable and embarrassing.  If I do anything even slightly energetic (hoovering, ironing etc.) it is worse, and it takes a long time for me to cool down.  I was referred to a dermatologist who prescribed pills, which just dried up my eyes (red, sore and bloodshot within 30 mins) and mouth (making it impossible to eat or even speak).  She point blank refused to consider any other treatment, even telling me botox does not work for the face, which i know is untrue.  This condition, to other people, seems trivial but it is not.  In the summer I cannot go outside, so I can't even play with my grandchildren.  I certainly couldn't go out shopping or to a social event, the sweat drips off me and my hair is drenched within minutes.  I obviously cannot use make-up, or even have a decent hairstyle, which zaps the confidence.  I do have a thyroid problem but that is well controlled.  I am a little overweight but not much.  I have other non-related medical conditions (arthritis, fibromyalgia).  Has anyone any experience of the new gadget around which includes a mask for the face, plugged into a machine - sorry I can't remember the name of it.  I know they are very expensive but I am desperate.  Any helpful tips would be great.  Thank you.

Yes hi my name is nkki. I was perfectly fine b4 I was attacked n actually killed on sum1s couch. It's a very touchy subject 4 me n it took a lot of hard work for me to learn how to do everything again, almost normally. I.E. walk, talk, eat etc. This is just the back story. The ending result being that I have brain damage and multiple health problems now including severe hyperhidrosis, fibromyalgia, arthritis, and degenerative disc and joint disease and I've had all these issues since I was 26. And what is horrible is everything is just getting WORSE!! I can't take anymore of this!! I can't leave my house or get up and do anything without my whole face and head and neck being absolutely drenched with sweat so bad it just drips off of me like I just got outta the shower. It's so embarrassing for my kids to b around me they see how everyone stares at me and it hurts me to see them like that. It's gotten so bad I dread even getting outta bed everyday and have contemplated how I can go on like this anymore. With all the pain and sweat and I've gained over 90lbs with the hyperthyroidism I was diagnosed with. Please if there is any help at least to PLEASE HELP WITH STOPPING THE SWEATING!! I HATE THE HORRIBLE SWEATING!! And it's not fair for my kids to live with this and deal with seeing their mother go thru all this at such a young age. I've been on 4 different medications and they didn't do anything at all to help. Please, please I'm BG begging if anyone knows of anything, far of getting all my sweat glands removed, that will help!!

Hi Nicole, sorry you are going through such a bad time for someone so young. I can't even imagine how you are coping. I thought I had it bad but gee you have it much worse. Unfortunately at the moment nothing I have tried has worked but I'm do to go back to the doctors in two days time to try something else. Keep in touch with the comments on here as someone may find something to help. Have you gone through all the comments on here and tried all of those things? At least you know there are others with the same sweating problem. I know what it's like , I get changed two or three times a day and at night another two to three times again. My wife seems to spend all her time doing washing at the moment. I have lots of other problems as well which I have gone through on earlier posts . I know it's hard to keep going and there have been a few times when I have given up but for some reason I am still alive so far. Keep in touch and we can try to help each other on here. Take care.

No you aren't alone. There are lots of us around, if you realise there is only a small group who have found this site. Next time you see your doctor ask about alpha blockers and beta blockers. They didn't work for me but they may work for you. Who knows, each of us is different.

The best thing I ever did was stumbling across this site because for the first time I found out I wasn't the only one with this condition.

Yes , do keep trying. I never thought I would find a fix but I did so you just have to keep trying. Make your doctor realise it is an important issue and you need help. I realise too late that my doctor didn't know that I thought it was such a big deal.

Best of luck , and keep this page updated. I will keep looking on the net for you and the others to try help anyway I can because unless you have been through it you don't realise how bad it really is.

Plus all of my drs have said that the sweating is due to brain damage and destroyed nerves is that true or is it due to all my other health issues

Hi everyone, went to the doctor today and I've been put on Oxybutynin as some other people have mentioned. Two 5mg tablets per day. Had my first one at 11:00 and the 2nd one at 8:00. So far so good. Except feeling a little light headed at the moment, a little dizzy. But I shall see how igo and report back a lot so you know if it works. Fingers crossed.

I forgot to mention the doctor said you could have oxybutynin in tablet form or patch form. But I thought I would sweat the patch off . Yrs ago I was on Norspan patch for pain relief but the patches would get all gooey and come off .

I started that drug 2 weeks ago. It seems to work. Did your Dr say to take 2 every day. Or do you take them as needed. Like if you were going to an event or getting ready to go to work you would take them on days off you would not? I have not talked to my Dr. I called in the request for the prescription and she filled it. She wants me to make an appointment with dermatologist.

My mouth is dry. That's common with many drugs though. Let's hope this works for us. There are so many people speaking on this forum. I have replied to a few. Not sure who they were or how to find that same connection again. I will try to watch for a reply from you to hear what your doctor told you. Thank you for sharing, Vicki

Hi Vicki , she put me on two a day to start with. I see her again in a couple of weeks and if need be she will bump it up then. I saw a dermatologist for another problem concerning a reaction to low testosterone and injection of a boost for it. I mentioned the sweating to her but she didn't seem interested at all. She didn't want to know because my doctor at the time didn't right it down on the referral . Not going back to her anyway , she didn't help me for my other problem. My mouth does seem a little dry but it might be in my mind . Still a little light headed though. I so hope this works for us and everyone here because I know how embarrassing it is . Lucky for me I don't work because of my bad back, actually I don't think that is lucky at all.

I know what you mean about the comments , I have left quite a few for other people but I never seem to be able to find most of them again, lol. I do check this almost everyday as I have a lot of spare time although it is in pain.

I think if I am going to go out somewhere I will take an extra

Well my first night on my new tablets and the first night for a long time that I haven't sweated at all. My pj top is dry , I can't believe it. That's a good start.

Great. And I'm out shopping going to stores and I'm not sweating my face off! :-) my hair is dry very unusual. I took one pill this morning but I actually forgot my evening pill and I'm out of town. I don't know if this is just a chance Behavior or for real hard to believe. But I like it

I've forgotten what it felt like to have dry hair, it's been damp for so long especially in the morning. I can't believe how quick it has worked. Fingers crossed this will continue. A big test will be later when I sit down with my wife  and watch a movie or something because usually my back is soaked after that. But it is very promising so far. It actually does feel weird feeling dry, it's been so long that I have sort of got used to having a wet head and for it to drip down on to my chest and back.

enjoy the rest of your shopping and I hope the good news continues for you too. 🤗😀👍

So sorry for you Alex as this is the only med that has worked for me. Maybe something else will work for you. What about beta blockers ? They work for some people.

Peter, tell me the dry mouth is severe.  I have taken a couple of drugs but my mouth was so dry I couldn't speak.  Thank you so much - and how is it going so far??  Diana

It hasn't been that severe for me although I'm drinking heaps of water. I've heard it can react differently with different people. Are you drinking lots because it does make you dehydrated. Since my first tablet a couple days ago I haven't had any sweating at all which is amazing . I used to change my tshirt 3 times a day and my night shirt at least twice at night. I have been dry right from the start of taking the meds. Even walked the dogs with no reaction.

How many pills are you taking ? I am only on two 5ml tablets a day. One in the morning and one in the evening. Try drink as much water as you can during the day and see if that helps.

i will keep everyone informed on my progress so if you have any other questions I will be checking in almost every day for awhile.

Good luck Diana, let me know how you end up going.

Hi Peter it sounds like the pills are working good for you. Also for me. Sometimes I don't take the second pill if I'm home and I'm not going to be doing anything I don't take it. The dry mouth is a bit of a problem but nothing like sweating your face off! :-) they sell a product, there is a mist, tablets, I'm not sure of the brand but it is for dry mouth.

Yeah now that you mention it my wife mentioned something about that when she was looking up the tablets on the net. Diana you should do a search or ask your GP for the name of it. Glad to hear it's going well for you too Vicki . The only time the dry mouth annoys me is during the night as I have a mask on to help with my breathing and stop me snoring. So I keep having to take it off to have a drink. But it's a small price to pay to stop the sweating. I can't believe how happy I am that the sweating has stopped. It was really getting to me , every day and no doctors seem to care or didn't know what to do about it. My poor wife having to do extra washing all the time just because of the sweating. And the feeling of having a wet head all the time. Feels so good now.

How have you been feeling? Are you still taking the oxybutin 2 times a day? I only take 5 MG at night before I go to bed. Have not tried it during the day because of people saying it makes them feel dizzy.

Peter, I have had the same problem, mostly due high dose to prescription medications that I have to take. There are a number of products in drugstores for dry mouth.  If you go on the internet they are listed by stars by the users.  I would pick the one with the highest "stars" and try it.  Hope you find some relief!
