Excessive Yawning and Constant Need to Breathe Deep

Posted , 480 users are following.

For the past few days, I've been yawning a lot, much more than average (once every few minutes I feel the need). If I'm not yawning I'm breathing in as deep as I can to get similar "satisfaction". Often I cannot get the "satisfaction" from these and so the urge grows and grows, meaning it can get quite uncomfortable. When I do manage it, the urge is back a few seconds later. This is whether I'm tired or not, almost all day.

I'm not particularly anxious about anything in particular, and get the same amount of sleep as before this started.

This also happened at some point within the past year which continued for a month or two if I remember correctly.

Does anyone have any idea what it is or how to make it a bit better?

Thanks.

This condition is entirely mental and it is caused by anxiety. I had it a couple years ago and I got treated with Deanxit. Then it happened a couple years later and I thought I could just beat it without medication but it kept getting worse and worse. My psychiatrist put me on xanax and prozac, which finally got rid of it. Now I am experiencing it again, and I am trying not to get back on medications. It is extremely annoying, and my diaphragm is kind of hurting because I keep gasping for more air in order to get this "satisfying" sensation.

Hi Leah, how long u take the anxiety medication to see the effect?

If I may jump into this thread, I'd like to say Deanxit has many potential bad side effects. In fact, it is banned in the U.S.A. The drug was produced in Denmark and sold world wide. Recently, it has also been banned in the UK, Australia, Canada, Japan, and even in Denmark where it originated. It is made up of two components, flupentixol, which is really an antipsychotic, and melitracen an "old school" tricyclic andidepressant. Tricyclic antidepressants aren't used to much anymore. However, they do work for some patients when the newer drugs like Zoloft, Celexa, and Lexapro do not. Most doctors try to stay away from tricyclic anitdepressants. Please keep in mind most of these anidepressants, (SSRIs) especially, Prozac contain small amounts of fluoride. In reality, fluoride is not healthy for the human body. As a matter of strick fact, sodium fluoride first came on the scene in the U.S. before the 1900's as an insecticide to kill cockroaches and other insects. In very high doses it simply knocks you out and kills you. That was the theroy in pest control. Today, it is even found in most common rat poison products. Another known yet somewhat hidden fact is that the Nazis's gave fluoride to the concentration camp detainees to keep them docile, submissive, and easier to control. It would keep them subdued. In conclusion, I would stay away from fluoride based antidepressants. Though they contain small amounts, overt time it can cause you harm. Also, like stated before they have horrible side effects. Be well everyone and stay informed. Do your research!

If pepto bismal works for you then that's great. For many of us it's not so simple.

I just found this thread and am glad to know that I am not alone. My need to "get a deep breath" once in a while goes back probably almost 40 years. It was never too big of a deal until the past few weeks since I need to yawn to get it every 5 minutes or so. That leads to watery eyes and is really just a PITA. It's hard to imagine that it is only a symptom or result of anxiety since it feels like a physical need for a deep breath, but I suppose it is possible. I have had a dry cough/wheezing for the past 3 months. Took steroids, Z-pac and inhaelr but really no effect. Musinex helped a little bit. At my physical exam yesterday the doctor said the cough is either a result of post nasal drip or reflux (even though I don't feel or have symptoms of reflux). I also take 450 mg of Wellbutrin XL more for anxiety than depression. I have never had a panic attack or hyperventilationg, just incessant/irrational worry/fear. I never have taken this high of a dose so not sure whether it has to do with that either. I will take the Musinex again today and let you all know the results. I am also going to try Zantac for the cough since that is

what the Doc recommended for reflux if that's what it is. Just wanted to chime in and share my experience and will get back with the results of the Zantac and Musinex.

I've been feeling what people are describing here for 4 days now. It is scary reading the comments cuz I don't wanna have this for years. As someone mentioned, sometimes it feels like it would be better dying. Doctor said it is anxiety, as I've been blood tested and lung checked. Nothing was found out of the ordinary. I feel the need to satisfy the breathing by deep breathing and the more I can't get it the more it gets worse. Yesterday I sat down on my living room crying and gasping trying to get the satisfaction. I use of a technique sometimes, which feels like "cheating" but I don't care, I slowly look at the sun, waiting for a sneeze, and my lungs are able to "get there", if you know what I mean. Yawning also helps with the satisfaction part. I've been getting better tho it hasn't stopped, made me quit Marijuana cuz it felt worse everytime I smoked it. Hope you guys get well from this.

Hi there, I see this post is 3 years old but am wondering if you have found the solution to your problem? it sounds like you have the exact issue I do,

I have a physical job, run and workout or climb everyday, eat healthy most of the time, I drink seldom maybe once a month and am probably in the best shape of my life right now, still having this issue.. some days are better than others sometimes can go months no issues, one thing I have found is that the symptoms are usually worse the night following a strenuous workout but for me it is usually not present most of the day.

have the anxiety meds helped or the acid reflux?

this week has been worse than others, I have catalogued everything I have eaten, almost the same thing everyday, tonight is pretty bad hence me finding help.

    saltana bran with milk, yoghurt

chicken quarter, chicken nibbles, banana, coleslaw, 2 eggs

roast pork or chicken dinner, kumara, potatoes, green beans

chocolate bar or icecream for dessert

Suggestions I've had were that it may have been the dust from work but that would not explain me having this throughout my childhood..

sometimes if I need a 'good' breath I expel all the air in my lungs ( breath out so there is absolutely no air at all in me) then take a normal to good inhale. There's about a70% chance I will get a breath full of oxygen there whereas normally 30% But like you said 4 or 5 breaths later I need to take another. No wheezing, no coughing, no bloated feeling, slow deep breaths don't really help as it just feels like the breath took did not contain enough or any oxygen, I start to water from the eyes eventually it's quite frustrating.

anyone have similar patterns in their regimen?

I went through the hard to get deep breath forever doctors tell me it was anxiety but I didn't believe it was that 4 years later found out I may have very mild asthma from acid reflux said it I got the reflux under control those symptoms may go away. So I hate taking meds do to later side effects so I use pepto bismol only as needed and it seems to have helped a lot. Notice when this happens to you it is usually with in an hour or two after eating. Good luck and maybe this will help you

Cheers Melinda, I don't have access to pepto bismol where I live but I drove to the shops as soon as I read the suggestions from you and the others on this thread to see if it is potentially the acid reflux, I have obtained gaviscon to help with that, and grabbed some magnesium too. I have noticed the past two days it is strongest after dinner, I generally have a bigger lunch however but I do not feel the symptoms then.. Hoping this helps will returned to this thread in a few days to detail the results.

I usually notice it to after I eat.  Sometimes I dont want to eat but I know I need to.

Yes it does. I was down to 117 118 pounds because I was scared to eat because it made me feel so bad and was convinced it was something from foods I was eating nearly cut out everything because of the feeling I'd get after eating. I am now up to 126 127 since February and doing much better. Pepto gives you instant relief in les than 20 30 minutes maybe it will help you. Sure hope so cause it is a bad feeling and hope anyone can find what helps them.

Hi everybody, I have tried a variety of suggestions on this list, gaviscon for acid reflux, magnesium, the shallow breathing technique and open dry ventilated sleeping areas and I seemed to have gotten rid of the issue for now, although not overnight I am fairly content with how I feel (being able to breath normally) understandably I am not too keen on reverting back to narrow down the soIution..

i would give a fair amount of credit to the shallow breathing technique if I were to give you the best estimated guess.. I was very sceptical of this but it seemed to help, the intitial 10 minutes obviously sucks but after that I seem to be able to breath easily.

(Slightly unrelated) the magnesium has done wonders for my sleep! I swear by it now, I seem to get super deep and restful sleep 10 days in a row now vivid dreams and long uninterrupted sleep.

the gaviscon did not really help in my case as far as I am aware. Atleast the first night.. This may not be the case for others though..

also this week I had reduced my running so potentially has a part to play..

      Hi Emc22,

Good to know that you are feeling better. Can tell me how to do swallow breathing technique?

      Regards,

      Hi Lynn,

earlier in the post someone by the name of Will something posted a description of buteyko breathing excercises, essentially you breath slowly and shallow through your nose.. You will feel like you are suffocating! Atleast for the first 10 minutes.. Every couple minutes or so a had to take a deep breath through my mouth.. But eventually (after about 10 minutes) I noticed I was getting a higher frequency of 'good' breaths maybe like 70% and these were still shallow and through the nose, Next morning when I felt I was starting to struggle I slowed my breathing and it fully prevented the issue from happening.

I was sceptical at first because there is no empirical evidence of this technique solving any issues, but consider how many people actually have this issues that we do, etc it's seems to work for me atleast but as I said i am also doing several other things to aid in stopping this issue and I don't want to stop any of them in fear that it will return..

in a nut shell what I do now..

I stopped eating chocolate as frequently, still eat it every now and again..

I started taking magnesium before bed..

I stopped running as frequently, I will run maybe 3 times a week..

      I adopted the breathing technique..

I keep my window open at night..

i have had had no trouble breathing since!

      Hi

I am really happy to hear that you are much better. I will try it out for sure.

      Thanks!

I cannot believe I found my exact symptoms on this site. I thought no one would understand that I can't stop yawning, although rarely did it give me enough air. I've suffered this for years and did' notice it was after I ate dinner until I read on here. I immediately went to my cabinet and chewed 2 pepto bismol. It is now 20 minutes later and I got total relief!!! Thank you so much for your story. I will try the slow breathing through my nose at another time as tonight it just seemed to make me almost panic for air.
