Excessive Yawning and Constant Need to Breathe Deep

Posted , 480 users are following.

For the past few days, I've been yawning a lot, much more than average (once every few minutes I feel the need). If I'm not yawning I'm breathing in as deep as I can to get similar "satisfaction". Often I cannot get the "satisfaction" from these and so the urge grows and grows, meaning it can get quite uncomfortable. When I do manage it, the urge is back a few seconds later. This is whether I'm tired or not, almost all day.

I'm not particularly anxious about anything in particular, and get the same amount of sleep as before this started.

This also happened at some point within the past year which continued for a month or two if I remember correctly.

Does anyone have any idea what it is or how to make it a bit better?

Thanks.

I talked to a nurse tonight, and she said the getting too much oxgen theory doesn't make sense. my plan for now is getting nerve pills. Has anyone tried this? I am going to try every test and medication I hear about on the internet. I have only had this for 2 weeks. I think I brought it on by anxiety. I also thought about Gerd.

So yours just started, and I have been dealing with this for about 2 weeks. There is a solution on here you might want to try taking health food store pills. It will be worth a try. I couldn't even take one of them because it gave me diarea. Another person said they were totally cured from it by laying on their left side, and breathing shallowly for 10 min. I am going for a lot of tests, getting nerve pills, and I am going to learn yoga, and do exercises for the lungs that are on utube.

Most of these replies are well-intentioned, but I think they are not specific to the problem you seem to be having. If I was treating you, my first questions as a medical professional would be:

1- What medications are you currently taking? And have you recently made any changes to your medication?

2- Have you recently had any changes to your lifestyle/routine (sleep/diet/stress/etc)?

Due to the possibly serious implications (ketoacidosis, blood pH imbalance, liver problems, kidney failure, diabetes, etc) I would suggest seeing a doctor immediately and have him run a full blood workup.

If he believes it is temporary (i.e. stress related), I suggest talking to your doctor about the possibility of trying a steroid inhaler... But again, this is a symptom of too many potentially serious conditions to ignore or look for a home remedy. Please talk to your doctor about it.

Hello all. I started having this problem for a week now. I just got back from my doctor and it turs out that there are many reason excessive yawning and deep breathing may occur. Tiredness, boredom, depression, side effect of medications, caffine withdrawal to name a few. My doctor suggests i get a CT scan of head to rule out some nerve thing (sorry I cant remember what he called it, i was nervous when he was talking) and he also took blood to check for a varity of things like thyroids, sugar level and so on. Ill report back to let you know how it turns out and for the few people that arent suffering from anxiety.

I know this is an older post, but I've had this problem for a long, long time and could never figure out what it was. Until now. I'm 45, been dealing with this since my teens. It would come and go and recently it was pretty bad and not going away. I've seen breathing techniques and all other things that didn't work at all for me. I actually figured out that (at least in my case) what's happening is that due to inflammation from some foods that my stomach apparently doesn't like, it was causing my stomach to be irritated and that gave my lungs less room to expand. I started eating more carefully and not eating gluten, breads, anything with carbonation etc... It started to help noticeably after 2 weeks. I then just by chance needed a cortisone shot in my shoulder....which is basically anti-inflammatory times 100. Almost within an hour of the shot, my stress to breathe deep was completely gone. Which validated my thought that stomach inflammation from foods I wasn't digesting well as the culprit. We all have foods we eat regularly that we are allergic to. It doesn't make us swell up or get hives or break out. It just irritates our stomach lining which can make us feel bloated or possibly feel nothing at all. The breathing issue is a side effect of this. Eliminate bad foods and eat healthy. You will fix yourself on your own in a few weeks. Good luck. It's worth it! I can breathe again!!

This has been happening to me on and off for several years.  For the past few months, more often, and finally has been non stop and much worse for about 3 weeks now.  For the last two nights, it has woken me up several times.  Does anyone else wake up gasping for air?

yep i do sometimes wake up gasping for air. i don't know if / how it's related but i would not be surprised. it seems to me like some kind of central sleep apnea, but when i had a sleep study done a few years ago they didn't catch any episodes so who knows. once when i was a teen i even woke up from an episode with blue lips. wikipedia says that central sleep apnea is more likely to happen if you're sleeping at time that you usually don't (like taking a nap, or traveling to a very different time zone). i think that may be true for me - though i woke up with one yesterday just from regular sleep. i really don't know which is worse, the yawning/sighing or the sleep apnea

Hi Clyde, I haven't addressed it with the doctor in quite some time.  When it first began, I was in the process of being evaluated by an endometriosis specialist.  The difficulty taking a deep breath, and shoulder pain made me wonder if it could have been related.  The doctor did say that the shoulder pain could have been referred pain from endometriosis on the diaphragm or even the lungs.  Ultimately, I had all endometriosis excised, however the problem with breathing is still present.  Like I said, it has gotten much worse and is waking me up.  I am just wondering if anyone else has an issue with this interrupting their sleep?
