Excessive Yawning and Constant Need to Breathe Deep

Posted , 480 users are following.

For the past few days, I've been yawning a lot, much more than average (once every few minutes I feel the need). If I'm not yawning I'm breathing in as deep as I can to get similar "satisfaction". Often I cannot get the "satisfaction" from these and so the urge grows and grows, meaning it can get quite uncomfortable. When I do manage it, the urge is back a few seconds later. This is whether I'm tired or not, almost all day.

I'm not particularly anxious about anything in particular, and get the same amount of sleep as before this started.

This also happened at some point within the past year which continued for a month or two if I remember correctly.

Does anyone have any idea what it is or how to make it a bit better?

Thanks.

God this is so frustrating. Everyone has a different "solution":

    -Vitamin B12

    -Water around heart

    -COPD

    -Too much Oxygen

    -Too little Oxygen

    -Breathing too shallowly

    -Breathing too deeply

    -Anxiety/Stress

    -Too little iron

    -Too much iron

    -Not giving enough blood

    -Spine issue needing chiropracter

    -Acid Reflux

    -Too much caffeine

    -Not sleeping enough

    -Vocal Chord Disfunction

    -Hiatal Hernia

    -Gluten Allergy

The list goes on and on. I appreciate everyone's insight but this is just getting ridiculous. This breathing deep thing started months ago and it's getting so freaking annoying. Why are there so many different things can cause it???? SO FRUSTRATING.

Well I have COPD and the air sacs in the lungs of a person with COPD get over expanded, they tell COPD patients, to purse their lips into a small circle and breathe that way, it really works. It's the only thing I've found that works.

Hi Steve .. if your doctor hasn't found any medical reason why you should have this problem (ie that you have no underying lung conditions) I'd go with the original suggestion .. you're probably hyperventitalting. Learn how to breath properly ..there are plenty of vdeos on youtube which show you how..

And try and calm do for heavens sake ..

Your advice about breathing with pursed lips as if through a straw is brilliant at least for me.  Still struggling though. Would love to hear from anyone who is implementing Buteyko breathing method. Had all tests and ok.  Definitely anxiety related as goes with tension in neck, shoulders, mild headache

Thanks for the advice about pursing your lips and breathing that way. I will try it - it seems to make sense.

    Steve,

For me this problem seems to be blood chemistry related. As I posted earlier, it began almost immediately after I gave blood platelets. I seems to go away pretty quickly ( a day or so ) after I begin taking a pretty comprehensive multi-vitamin supplement. If I stop taking the multi-vitamin for a couple of weeks the described symtoms will start again. It could be one of the B vitamins ( perhaps B12 ? ), iron, some obscure trace mineral, or electrolyte, etc.. It just seems reasonable to me, that if the blood delivers the oxygen to the cells and all the cells, of all our systems, somehow communicate with each other, then somewhere down this chain, somebody is not getting what they need to do their job and triggering this unhappy response to the management of that system !

I am still experimenting with this multi-vitamin cause/solution, but so far it looks convincing to me. It would be good to hear if someone else has had any relief using a supplement.

I will try tomorrow!! I really wish instead of just posts we can have some sort of discussion group where we can all talk to each other and provide ideas. But last time I tried giving my email address I was blocked.

I have been having the same problem for a few years now. It is called pseudo dyspnea or false shortness of breath. Basically, acids are forming in your esophagus. Bring it up with your doctor.

Can I ask what did the doctor do to help alleviate this problem? I am going to see my allergist next week for a spirometry check and follow up for allergies.  Would I ask my allergist or my family doctor about this?

Thanks for any help that you can give.

I agree with Jessica as the main way to stop this is to not overfill the sacs in your lungs, once that happens anxiety does set in, and it's a normal anxiety, when people feel they aren't getting air the correct way, we panic. The only thing that works for me is pursing my lips into a tiny O shape and breathing like that, it gives a chance to the sacs to deflate. I do this for hours if I have too. Sometimes I put on a blue mask that seems to help too. It controls the amount of air that I get. I think anxiety plays a big part of this, just when I come back to this forum I start to feel anxiety just by reading the posts lol. It's scary when this breathing thing happens. I honestly don't think there's anything they can do but the controlled breathing. Good Luck if you learn anything please let us know.
