Excessive Yawning and Constant Need to Breathe Deep

Posted , 480 users are following.

For the past few days, I've been yawning a lot, much more than average (once every few minutes I feel the need). If I'm not yawning I'm breathing in as deep as I can to get similar "satisfaction". Often I cannot get the "satisfaction" from these and so the urge grows and grows, meaning it can get quite uncomfortable. When I do manage it, the urge is back a few seconds later. This is whether I'm tired or not, almost all day.

I'm not particularly anxious about anything in particular, and get the same amount of sleep as before this started.

This also happened at some point within the past year which continued for a month or two if I remember correctly.

Does anyone have any idea what it is or how to make it a bit better?

Thanks.

I've been following this thread for a while now - I first experienced symptoms of not being able to finish a yawn about 3 years ago. Sometimes it happens for days on end, continuously all day and makes me feel tired and fed-up.

Other days it doesn't happen at all. I am only 24, have no stress or anxiety in my life and exercise for at least 1.5 hours a day. I am vegan and don't eat much junk food so a lot of the suggestions here didn't really apply to me as I have no other symptoms or allergies.

My mum has an under-active thyroid and at my last blood test I asked if my thyroid could be tested. It came back border-line under-active and the doctor suggested I need to up my salt-intake ( I currently don't have any salt in my diet) She suggested this might be one of the triggers for my breathing difficulty. I also was vitamin-d deficient so have since been taking high-potency supplements.

The combination of upping my salt-levels, my iron levels (from iron-rich foods, no supplements) and the vitamin d tablets my breathing has gone more or less back to normal, it is only generally a problem after a spin-class (this might be because the room is small and overheats very quickly + the vigorous riding!)

Getting your thyroid and iron levels checked might help some of you smilesmile

Good luck!! I wish there was a definitive answer!

Hi. These symptoms can be stress related as you say. But they can also be the result of something more serious. I had the exact same thing twice and both times it was associated with pulmonary emboli. It's an extremely annoying symptom (and it seem to annoy others). It went away the first time (a very long time ago) when by blood clots resolved. I have it again now with new clots. It was never definitively diagnosed before. It happened before and during when I was diagnosed with the clots (it took >1 year to diagnose them as I was so young). If anyone else reads this and has those symptoms, please check it out. There are other possible causes that are less serious (asthma, for example).

Clots in lungs. From symptoms got  tests (eventually VW scan). Second CT. First time it took greater than year and multiple docs. Second time it took one visit to doctor.

Curious, regarding your symptoms, did they come and go or were they constantly present? Can you describe exactly what your symptoms were? And how often during the day it happened. I want to compare to mine.

      Thanks.

Yikes, this makes me nervous about my own symptoms again.  This started almost 4 years ago for me when I was 30.  One day after the gym I found myself unable to get a satisfying breath (best described as air hunger), and 18 hours later I went to the ER afraid I had a PE.  D-dimer negative, chest x-ray negative, and a note to follow up with my GP.  Since then, I've had a chest CT, an echo, many EKGs, full PFTs, a tilt-table test, a cardiac MRI, and even an invasive CPET with right-heart cath which showed relatively low ventricular filling pressures and a fixed stroke volume, but no smoking gun for any diagnosis. My symptoms of air hunger/chest pressure are only generally only provoked AFTER moderate to high intensity exercise, and can last for several days.  I guess the only test I haven't had is the VQ scan, but they declined to do it.  Why did you need a second CT?  Did the first one not show the clots?

I had PE 30 years ago. I again had them recently. CT was for current clots. VQ scan was 30 years ago. Both positive. Standards of care and diagnosis change over time.

You can have exercise induced asthma.  I think a clot is ruled out by your negative tests.  I am not a doctor though.

I also requested to be tested for pulmonary embolism because it did seem logical to me. The local hospital assured me it was not an embolism. I still think it had something to do with it. To be all honest, I was hanging with an old friend and he influenced me to do cocaine and i think it was cut with something that i had an allergic reaction to. After a couple days of drinking a crap ton of water, my breathing went back to normal.

I see. All forms of asthma were ruled out for me. I’ve just accepted that I’ll have to live with it until my symptoms change or there are new developments in medicine. My doctor basically said that I should feel reassured that, whatever it is, it likely isn’t fatal since I’ve lived with it for years now. I guess I do find some comfort there, but the symptoms are very limiting when they happen.

posting just hoping this may benefit some of you w/these problems ... within 3 mos I had anesthesia 3 times ... a spinal steroid injection then rotator cuff surgery and another spinal injection .. while I don't believe it was the anesthesia I do wonder about the steroid injection .. the last one was mid Jan and it has been 7-8 weeks .. my symptoms got much worse right after and are now letting up (thank you Jesus) it takes 6 to 8 weeks to get out of system however dr's assure me it did not cause my breathing problems ...I read other postings and thought maybe was silent reflux so I dieted, ate my apple, quit my coffee but none of that was helpful for me,  I ruled out foods, thought maybe a new pillow was causing and changed .. I found L-Arginine & L-Citrulline at GNC and ordered 'liquid oxygen' fr Amazon (1 review said was hoax but rest of reviews were encouraging) however my dr snickered at those 2 items using the fact I thought they were doing some good to tell me it was all 'in my head'  Don't believe it ... there is something causing this .. now reading the L-arginine L-citrulline facts on line it helps get blood circulating, lowers blood pressure (it has for me) promotes muscle healing (need for my surgery) so I believe it may have helped me, after all have always heard when you yawn you need more oxygen in brain..anyway thru some miracle I have started breathing more normal (knocking on wood) whether it was these items or just the steroid getting out of my system I will continue to take them ... trying to get approved for back surgery now is my challenge, I am having to do heart cath. and see lung dr.... s/have kept my mouth shut but was afraid to go under again w/this problem .. since I just had surgery will have pulmonology ck for the clots .. hope some of you may benefit fr my ramblings & will post what pulmonologist says (my stress test was fine but heart dr says if pulmonology doesn't find answer he will do heart cath) can't tell you how good it feels as I sit here and easily draw a good deep breath .. again thank you Jesus!

I have went through similar issues a few years now lung doctor heart doctor  allergist  and it's led back to Gerd and anxiety  when my gerd acts up my anxiety kicks in seems like.  It's painful in the chest and back very tight feeling can't seem to get a deep breath and that makes my anxiety kick in so in return makes deep breaths even worse. I'll pray for you and you pray for me that the lord will give these doctors the right knowledge to treat us correctly. Try raising the head of your bed it helps a lot that has harley me most besides prayer. It will keep the acids from flowing back into your esophagus and lungs also eat an apple after each meal it is a non acidic food it helps and chew gum it creates extra saliva that pushes acids back down into stomach. Good luck and God Bless

It’s not GERD.  I tried protonix, Prilosec and other acid pump reducers. Its something with breathing pattern... The SOB comes on quickly within minutes. You can feel yourself starving for air! Yawning starts and air-hunger continues for me until the Klonipin kicks in 45 minuets later. That’s if it works? Sometimes it exacerbates it at first? If there is ever a study for this, sign me up!

I am sure mine is related to diet. I have a resting pulse of 37 - 41. I cycle long distances. I have ridden a century in 4hr 20 min. I finally resolved my 'can't get a breath issue' by narrowing my diet, then adding things back. I am definitely allergic to milk protein. I may have become allergic due to the high volumes of whey I have consumed over the years as I did endurance exercises. I can't drink milk, nor eat ice cream without having the breathing issue. I switch to 'Silk' soy milk. Now I am trying to figure out what I can use for fuel during my intense cycling events.

Does anyone get this feeling plus a heart rate that is really up and down? It can make me really tired and is worse on an evening. Thyroid normal and chest clear.  I am in my 20s and had it for around 4 month last year and have it again currently another 4 month.

yes... which is why I have a cardiologist involved.. they think its my heart but I don't think so... also makes my blood pressure rise... hot and cold weather affects it as well... I cannot catch my breath in hot or cold weather... I read a diaphragm can cause these symptoms and I am kinda waiting now for heart to be fully investigated and then I could get my doc to investigate the diaphragm.. I do have a thyroid issue, and it is under control.. I do have an asthma issue and this is not it and it was checked before I was sent to the cardiologist.... I am soooo sick of this happening and no answers. I just want to be able to walk my dogs and not get winded and not always have this feeling of not being able to take a deep breath

I have asthma too but always been mild and under control. Last time it bothered me through winter and spring. Again it is this time of year. Asthma sufferers more prone to reactions whether auto immune or regular allergy. Think a busy lifestyle makes it worse. Just noting similarities??
