Excessive Yawning and Constant Need to Breathe Deep

Posted , 480 users are following.

For the past few days, I've been yawning a lot, much more than average (once every few minutes I feel the need). If I'm not yawning I'm breathing in as deep as I can to get similar "satisfaction". Often I cannot get the "satisfaction" from these and so the urge grows and grows, meaning it can get quite uncomfortable. When I do manage it, the urge is back a few seconds later. This is whether I'm tired or not, almost all day.

I'm not particularly anxious about anything in particular, and get the same amount of sleep as before this started.

This also happened at some point within the past year which continued for a month or two if I remember correctly.

Does anyone have any idea what it is or how to make it a bit better?

Thanks.

what doctor told you that, that is all it is? and not a medical condition? as im sure you know it can get scary when you feel that uncomfortable feeling and it being difficult to catch your breath at times... just wondering did they rule out all other possible causes on you,? and what type of therapist and has it helped you?

this actually makes a lot of sense and people with asthma is worse because your always worried about your next breath. Somatic breathing is what ive been looking into. I started a fb page with this same exact name. look it up. faster answers.

I actually had this symptom myself a little over a year ago. It was also accompanied by some chest pain. I was told by my doctor's office to go to the ER where they did an EKG which they didn't tell me anything about and sent me back to my doctor. On my follow-up appointment my doctor told me that the EKG came back a little abnormal and that he would refer me to a cardiologist. After waiting for my insurance to approve the referral my pain was almost gone but the need to yawn and take deep breaths was still present. The cardiologist observed after doing a few different tests that I had pericarditis. To anyone experiencing these symptoms, please see your doctor and ask them to look into cardio as a possibility for causing these symptoms. Luckily all I needed was an anti-inflammatory and they gave me a mild antibiotic to treat what may have been an infection that caused the pericarditis in the first place.

I just got a prescription today for 1 to 3 10 mg tablets 1 hour before bedtime. I had to go to a psychiatrist 40 minutes away to get a prescription. I am excited to try it. I plan on starting with one 10 mg tablet, and then waiting a week before trying 15 mg. One thing to understand about this medication is that if you are already taking another antidepressant that is an ssri or snri, there is a small chance of developing something called serotonin syndrome. The psychiatrist I saw wasn't very concerned about it occurring with such a low dose, but apparently it still can. ( I already take an ssri called Trintellix). So you have to be aware of the symptoms of serotonin syndrome, and seek medical attention if it occurs. I hope to be back here reporting progress after I have given the medication a chance to work.

God I can't even imagine. Do you think you have "hyperventilation syndrome". Have you googled "the beneficial effects of oral amitriptyline in anxiety induced hyperventilation syndrome" on the OATEXT website?Have you tried amitriptyline?

Honestly, it sounds like you may have some sort of COPD as opposed to Chronic Hyperventilation Syndrome. The vast majority of CHS sufferers aren't bed ridden, and can shower and eat. If you haven't seen a pulmonologist yet, I hope you will consider going to one. Pulmonary function tests may show something other than CHS.

no i havent but i am suffering with no diagnosis and clear lung exams

if its as bad as you say maybe you should visit dr. wagshul. hes a lung specialist who has helped so many people. Lung Center of America is his institute out of ohio. people travel from everywhere because of how many people he's helped. may be worth a look. i have plans to go see him for my asthma. i know you said your lungs are clear but he may be able to figure out the reason for our air hunger. hope something good comes your way.

if this has been going on for 2 years and your still alive then id say its not life threatening. although i understand it feels like it but the anxiety of feeling like that can have an impact on you breathing as well.

if everything has been ruled out and you feel like you are gasping for breath id say there's a fair chance you are hyperventilating. print out the study and take it to your doctor - you've got nothing to lose but maybe get better. i've had it for 4 months and obviously not as bad as you but the amitriptyline has helped me enormously - i'd say i'm 90% better after 6 weeks of taking it. I cannot believe how much better i am it really is a miracle as far as i'm concerned. since you've had it for so long and so badly you may need a higher dose and it may take longer. you also need to fight through the urge to breath deeply which we've become addicted to. that terrible feeling of needing to take that breath is your respiratory centre being challenged to accept normal carbon dioxide levels hence it will try and make you big breathe again. you just have to keep at it - after 2 years it will be a process to breath softly (preferably through your nose) but little by little you'll get there. amitryptiline will 'soften' that constant urge where you should be able to withstand it conciously. it will seem overwhelming to stop yourself sighing, yawning or gulping air and very uncomfortable but in a way it means you are making progress in resetting your respiratory centre to accept a 'normal' ventilation. thats the way i'm facing it and i'm just getting better and better each day. i'm at the point now where i can look at the whole thing logically and understand what i'm doing rather than just thinking about my next deep breath and being anxious until i get it (constantly all day every day). good luck - be proactive and get some help but also alot of it is something only you can do with hard work but you will and can get through it.

i agree! I've been taking amitriptyline for a few days and although my asthma is still a factor, i have felt a lot better. i still have the urge but its less and less each day. i dont knownif its the amitriptyline or its just going away normally but i fell a lot better since taking it. im doing amitriptyline 12.5 mg because i was prescribed 25 mg nightly but i walower nted to start off lower to start.

stick with it i really 100% believe it is working. for the past 4 nights ive taken 25mg which i feel has really hit it on the head. im planning on doing 25mg for only week and then start going down 5mg a week. im hoping to be not taking anything by the end of june. i was prepared to keep going up until i got this sorted but i feel like at 25mg i'm 100% on top of it. i really hope this works for everyone!

does the 25mg make you tired and groggy the next day?

    • Posted

Not at all. The only issue I've had was probably the first two days I started taking it (10mg). I was ok but just felt a bit out of it - didn't stop me doing what I needed to do though as it wasn't really that bad. I start work at 8:30am (get up at 6.45am) and I take it around 8pm the night before so by the time I start work it's been over 12 hours since I've taken it.
