Excrutiating pain after total ceramic hip replacement

I had a ceramic total hip replacement 6weeks ago and I'm in agony. I'm 40 yeats old and had avascular necrosis of the rigjt hip.I had a titanium disc replacement 6 years ago in my lower back so I was aware going into surgery it would not be easy. However, when the epidural wore off after the hip repkacement I was in agony, in fact I was in tears and did not sleep a wink until after 5 days when sheer exhaustion set in I have pain in my groin when I move my leg it feeks like it's grating on something.I also have pain down to my knee including my knee. My lower back again is in agony also my right buttock feels like it's being pinched all the time all the way down the back of my leg which I guess is sciatica. I saw the surgeon who preformed the hip replacement today, he says all my pain is coming from my back. What I can't umderstand is why am I in more pain after the op then before. My surgeon was very unhelpful saying I need refered on for my back by my G.P. Has anyone else had excrutiating pain after a total hip replacement. I can't believe the surgeon dismissed my pain and said the hip is fine when the horrendous pain im in only started after the operation. Like I say I'm looking for people with similar situation or knowledge and advice.

I had horrid lower back pain!! I am almost 8 weeks post-op and it's slowly getting better. Your doctor is wrong. You are probably doing too much. Pace yourself. You will be fine. It takes at least 6-8 months to fully recover.

    Hi,

Pain caused by a 'pinched nerve' such as several people have described can often be  adjusted by a good chiropracter.

My hip X-ray shows that it is twisted up on one side.  I intend to have it adjusted before the operation so that I can start out square and then I intend to have it done again after the operation when I can tolerate the adjustment.  Presentlly one leg appears shorter than the other, but it is not the leg length.

I have had other visits to the chiropracter in previous years to correct various joint misalignments in the back caused by falls or bending and twisting at the same time and it has worked for me.  If it doesn't right itself in one or two visits, it is probably something else, but a good chiropracter will know.

    Hope this helps, Mikey

    Hi  Chris

I had a right hip replacement 5 years ago, and still in pain, 1 1/2 years  i had my left hip replaced i do not get any pain, goin back to right hip, fed up of going to hospital docs will take no notice of me, he sent me for a scan saying i had hurniers that come back ok, they say go back and tell him it your hip, i have just come back from hospital another doctor, sent me for xray your hips ok he said, after 5 years i should know if i am in pain or not, it could be a ligament you can fell  when i walk it sticks out and moves it could do with cutting , so here i go again he is writing to the doc that did it the first time  i know what he will say , but this time i am not going to just say ok , had both hips replaced and knees ,,,

Hi Chris,I had a total hip replacement done on Jan 31 2013, prior to that I was an extremely active 48 yr old. I worked full time, walked 17 miles a day and had just tested for my blk belt in Tao.Kwon Do.  Doctors thought it was a genic arthritic condition but no arthritis exists in my body after numerous tests, any way after hip replacement experienced groin pain and muscle spasms in the hip area along with thigh and hip flexor pain . Walked the mall as advised by doctor and ended up in extreme pain and spasms, as well as doing PT 2x per week which was spent in spasm. Told surgeon and was also told it was my back. Had MRI's on my back and had a recent surgery to shave 2 dics and move sciatic on left side (hip was on right). still no relief.  Have since gone to different Orthopeadic and again told hip is sound but he found tares in some of the tissues surrounding hip and groin. Received injections but still no relief from the groin, hip flexor, thigh, back and the hip which all make walking painful.  I continue to have spasms in my lower back on the right side, but the back doctor says it is my hip.  I am now seeing another hip orthopeadic referred by both the back and second hip doctor. This has been two years and still no one can find the answers ; do I regret my decision to have hip replaced no, but wish that doctors were more sensitive to patients symptoms and pain instead of passing the buck to each other.

I know this thread it 9 months old, but I am in here trying to get some input into other peoples hip replacements too.  I had mine over 6 weeks ago and I am STILL in as much pain as the day I left the hospital. I can't take the narcotic pain pills as they make me feel even sicker.  So I am "toughing" it out.  But I agree with Meslaton a few posts down "who ever has the idea that you will have little or no pain after a total hip replacement is being totally unrealistic or lying! Period.  I am sure WONDERING however IF ONE DAY this PAIN WILL GO AWAY.  It is BAD! As Meslaton says" like hell".  And I have to have the knee still also  done on that same leg.  I remember still from 6 yrs ago the other knee I had done, it took exactly either 7 or 9 weeks to the day before that pain went away.  But I think the hip is far worse. As your body has to rely TOTALLY on the other hip for full support of your whole body's weight.  I feel like I have been a stork now for 8 YEARS!  It's hard indeed.  Really feel sorry for men who have lost limbs from war or diabetes.  Today is June 3, 2015 I had my hip done April 27th and anterior total hip replacement.  Using a Zimmer Prosthesis. I hope one day when the pain goes away I can feel as good about this replacement as my knee 6 yrs. ago.

    Hi Chris

I had a THR in Jan 2015, reading your post describes EXACTLY how I feel now. I'm so frustrated and upset.  I wondered how you are doing now and what was the outcome to your situation?

I had a ceramic right hip replacement 6/9/14 and I have been in pain everyday since and my dr keeps blowing me off too. He says since the xray looks good that everything is fine. I have groin pain and it shoots down to my whole leg causing knee and ankle pain. I just went to see another dr for a second opinion and they are going to do a hip aspiration to make sure everything really is fine.My advice, go see another dr. I kept telling my dr that my legs weren't even and he kept saying they were fine. When I saw this new dr he said my right leg was shorter than the left.

Hi Chris. That's just what I had for 18 months post metal and plastic hip replacement. V little to see on xray, some ultrasound evidence of inflammation of hamstring and Iliopsoas but not enough to explain level of pain and immobility. Again disputes on leg length difference. Consultant asked for local and national second opinions. Each concluded that the head was too long - only by a few mms - and that this was exacerbating the leg length AND holding my hip jacked out too tight and when I look in the mirror I am wonky. Raised up and out on my operated side. So my consultant has taken their review as correct but is still vary of revision due to risk. He has now done the other hip and we are waiting to see if this calms everything down on both sides. I have hadweekly physiotherapy since Feb 14. Sadly

pain, inability to sit or walk or do slopes mean I have not worked since Dec 13 and not walked up any beloved hills for a very long time. I am otherwise a fit 52 yr old.

I have been rayed, ultra sounded, Mri and CT scanned and its taken an age to get a diagnosis. I write down what hurts during which activity and hand it to the consultant and give home as much information as possible. He is used to delivering perfection and is the go to guy for other consultants who mess up. So I do have confidence in him and accept that success rates are 90-95%. we've ended up in the minority % and we need to work persistently and with the drs to get back into the majority fold.

If you are upset then show it - being a brave soldier did me no good and it was sobbing on. Friday that made the enormity of my disabilities sink in. My consultant worked over the weekend and called me firsts hing Monday morning with 2 second opinions booked.

good luck and try to stay calm and persistent. I feel your pain. Xxx

I had the same situation having avascular necrosis. I had right total hip replacement (ceramic). It was done 6/9/14 and I've been in pain everyday since and my dr keeps blowing me off. He just sent me to pain management. I have been on pain meds all this time and I keep asking my dr if there's any reason why I'm still in pain and he tells me everything is fine. I got tired of it and now I have gone to another dr for a 2nd opinion and he is running several test to rule out infection etc.

Melissa, I had the very same. Mine was right hip due to avascular necrosis. Ceramic/titanium. 6/9/14, knew from day one it was not right. After one year they admitted the cup had become loose no reason, and am awaiting a revision due prob September time.

Am worried if it's a fault with my bones it may happen again or, leg length may differ all the worst case sinarios I've already been through 2 years ago.

You know your body, I'm sure my consultant thought it may eventually heal so don't give up. Good luck & keep pestering if you think there's something wrong. Them that shouts the loudest get results x

Thanks Julie. I also have leg length difference and my sugeon claims that they are even. The new ortho dr I'm seeing noticed it right away.

I have avascular necrosis of both hips. Right hip was replaced 6/9/14. Ceramic uncemented. I have been in excruciating pain everyday ever since the hip replacement. My ortho kept telling me everything was fine because the xrays looked good. He kept blowing me off every visit and eventually just sent me to a pain management specialist. I got tired of him blowing me off and went for a 2nd opinion. This new Dr. did a hip aspiration. The hip aspiration shows abnormal white blood cells. I'm scheduled for an MRI on Thursday and follow up with him on the 18th. I haven't seen him yet but believe there's definitely something going on. I still have excruciating pain on the right side and my left hip has gotten worse. I can't have the left hip done until the right is cleared. FRUSTRATED!

      Hi melissa

where abouts do you live, I have replied to you before. My revision for my hip is due 3/09/15. My ceramic cup is loose (I had AVN) and mine didn't mend you seem to have a lot of tests and at last have got a diagnosis. They only xrayed mine and to tell you the truth I couldn't see what they were trying to show me on the X-ray! I feel there is something else going on but they've offered me no other tests! I'm worried if it's not loose when they get in there will they close me up or do the op anyway?

im so frightened it may not solve the pain and I'll be worse off, I've never been a gambler and now I'm gambling with my life?

i know exactly how you feel, but they are the professionals and have trained for years to make us well.

I have waited 2 years to get here so you're doing good. Please keep us informed.

Hi Julie and Melissa I hope. You get sorted out soon. It's terrible that we are not always listened to. You know your own body. Just because they can't see anything doesn't mean your pain is not there. I have every sympathy I am in worse pain wise then before the op. It was bad enough pre op! My femoral nerve was damaged and it's been 20 months. I have had extra physio which has improved my muscle response. However the more I try to do around the house the more pain I get.I get tingling burning and electric shock type pain. My leg is so sensitive to touch I can't stand it. I have had nerve tests there was slight improvement but since Last October don't feel any improvement. Reading up on it I don't think I am likely to improve as time goes on. I am never going to go through any op again as I was traumatised by the pain. I do have better days when I cope but today it's really bad. My heart goes out to everyone experiencing chronic pain. Do hope you both get better. Xx

      Hi Julie

We have spoken in the past. I live in Northern Virginia. I know that feeling of fear all too well. That's also part of the reason I went and got a 2nd opinion. This new Dr. Is more on top of things . It's a shame because I picked my original surgeon because he came highly recommend and he performed a shoulder decompression on my right shoulder. It pretty much seems to me that he doesn't have the same attitude. He seems to be annoyed with his job. I think he should just go ahead and retire already .

Oh my goodness Melissa. No one should have to suffer so much as you have. My just goes out to you. I hope and pray the up coming appointments will give you a diagnosis clear path to relief.smile

My total hip replacement was on 14 May 2014.It was an anterior approach. Also un cemented ceramic hip replacement.

Also have I t band inflammation and lighting bolt nerve pain. But that is getting better. I have gabapentin when really reduced nerve pain.

This surgery has been very painful.even more than my total reconstruction of my lumbar spine. I will never have another hip Surgery. Blessings to you.xxxx
