Exercise

Hi I'm currently 10 months post op. Still need other hip replacing. Seeing consultant next week.

I'm wanting to lose some weight before next op and wanted to join a gym. Just not sure what I can and can't do if I do join. They do have a pool at the gym looking at but wanted to use the equipment. Does anyone else go to gym and what exercises do you do.

Thanks.

    Hello Sarah

Hope you are recovering well from your first op. I had my right hip done in March and due the left on Thursday. I returned to the gym 7 weeks post op but took it very very slowly. I found the bikes and cross trainer great for strengthening my muscles but don't over do it, your body will tell you when it's time to stop. Even now some days I can't do as much as I did the day before. I just stop when I need to. My consultant has approved this but told me to take it steady. Good luck with your next appointment and the gym! X

    Dear Sarah

I do strongly recommend that you try some swimming sessions. As I needed to give one of my ankles a rest whilst waiting for the revision of the total ankle replacement and wanted too stay fit I took up swimming.

I was amazed at how it helps the entire body and respiratory system. I only stopped doing it when my hip replacement on the other side wore out! It was twenty years old and had been worked hard all those years and swimming half a mile every other day proved the last straw for it!

    Good luck

Sarah, if the main goal is wait loss. Small diet changes can do wonders. They told me to try and lose weight before surgery. My gym owner, mentioned, just start eating three scrambled eggs and cup of yogurt for breakfast. I did, and before I knew it I was down 18 lbs. The high protein keeps your metabolism up. And I found I ate less for lunch. Just thought I would mention that. Also try to find a small gym to join. Mine is a little boxing gym, that is very low key and friendly as opposed to having 1000 people around you at large places.

    Good luck!

    hi sarah,

Oh, I know that feeling -

I wanted to lose weight and get fit before my 1st. THR surgery -- unfortunately it went awry and ended up in a lot of pain (wrong exercises!)

Then 2nd THR was scheduled but by then I was in so much pain that, again, I could not continue the exercises, not even the stationary bike -

Is there anybody at the gym who can supervise  you do the exercises?

Perhaps doing upper body work will be beneficial

Pool was not available to me but I think that might be a great way to stay fit -

that is all you can do for now ... don't be too hard on yourself  -

come back here and le us know how you are getting on, okay

    big warm hug

Sarah, if you are in a lot of pain it is only going to get worse if you go to the gym. You wont lose much weight going to a gym, better to lose it be dieting. Swimming is a good exercise but again you wont lose weight. However it is important to get up regularly and not sit too long, maybe a short gentle walk I would suggest.  Good luck with your operation.
