Exercise after Hernia Repair

Posted , 3 users are following.

I'm 4 weeks post op for a ventral henia and I was just given the ok to get back to  my exercising.  I like to do half sit ups and planks.  My doctor told me to start slow and then work up to my old pace, however, I need to stablize while doing them.  Does anyone out there have any good ideas on core exerice as I do not want ruin my expensive (haha) surgery.

Thanks,

KelleyI

With just 4 weeks behind you, it's still possible that pain will tell you where your boundries are. Listen to what your body tells you. Take it slow so you can stop or lighten up before it's too late.

I know your body tells you more than anything else.

    Hi Kelly,

I'm coming up to three weeks post op for a ventral hernia.

My consultant surgeon said to me "If it was me, I wouldn't lift anything for 6 weeks."

You know what? I'm going to listen to him and then some - I too do not want to ruin the chances of the expensive surgery I have had to repair the hernia being successful. Re-repairing a hernia carries with it the increased likelihood of failure yet again plus a more complex operation.

I would err on the side of caution. By the time your body tells you it’s feeling pain it will be too late, the damage will be done. Personally I am going to wait 3 months until I start to try to regain my core strength with any targetted exercise, in the grand scheme of things it’s not very long to wait. The advice I have had is to start Pilates exercises tailored to gently exercising the abdominal muscles after 6 weeks. Sit-ups were a definite and emphatic “NO”.

    Well that’s my 6 pennyworth.

    Regards,

    Phil.

      Hi Phil,

I agree with you on the time, I just wanted to start something low and slow.  I still don't want to lift more than 20 lbs.  My doctor also stated that if it's hard at 40 lbs just don't do it and trust my body.  I plan on waiting about 3 months for more intense exercises.

I guess I was just thinking ahead!  Your 6 pennyworths are great advise!

Keep well as you are still healing.
