Exercise after THR

I had a posterior THR nine months ago.  I still have groin pain if I overexercise or if the exercise includes internal rotation. Is this common?  Will it ever go away?

Wow I hope not, i had same today!  If you don’t mind me asking, are you overweight, my doc told my the more weight I take off the less residual pain later.  I am 5’6” and weigh 270 so I can really stand to lose weight

I weigh 180. The pain is a 1 or 2. Not enough for meds. Just enough that I know it is there.

Hi Linda, i am 26 months post op, and occasionally get groin pain still if I over do it, and have leg in a position it doesn't like but it goes away pretty quickly, for you and Laurie, you are still healing, it takes up to two years for the muscles to heal and sometimes your muscles can be tight. especially the Illio tibial band that goes from pelvis right across thigh. It will get better. I go to the gym now and no problems at all.

Hi auntiebean, when I saw the post op nurse I said that muscles take two years to heal and she said I was wrong they take around three months! I wonder who is right?

    Yes, and Yes.

Not everyone gets it (I didn't), but quite a few do.

It goes eventually, you just need to slowly build up the muscles to do the job of allowing you to walk properly again.  Like most pain, it will eventually subside as you re-learn to walk with a good gait again. It seems to be caused by the previous state of our bodies walking all wonky to reduce the pain before we had our THR's.

    Best wishes

I was told specifically to never make a internal rotation move because it could cause dislocation. The knee should never rotate inward across the center line. It can rotate outward just fine. Maybe your doing movements you shouldn't do?? I do leg presses, and sit to stand moves a bunch. I get a little pain , but I feel things getting better. I am 40 right side posterior august 17

All restrictions including internal rotation was removed at my 4 month post op. I see the surgeon for follow up in January and will ask him about it.

Funny how different surgeons are different. Mine recommend s no internal type movements ever again , or any impact exercises. They told me they just had a pstient dislocate. She was 12 years post op. But she bent over in garden, rotated knee inward, with slight twist at waist. They said that's all it take to dislocate . That certain move
