Exercise and BP readings

I wondered whether others on this site have ever taken their BP after a brisk walk, something we are told not to do. I assume they tell us not to do it as it will make the BP rise although settle back to normal afterwards. I find it goes the other way and drops off the scale. It comes back to normal of course. I'm just curious. We are told not to take the BP after drinking a cup of hot tea or coffee too and I find that that does make the pressure rise.

There is more to this walking lark than meets the eye. My wife is type 2 diabetic and Sunday night we "indulged" in a carvery at a local restaurant. She had some mash potatoes, a big no-no if you are diabetic. She took her BG readings an hour after eating and they were very high. In a state of semi panic she grabbed her coat and went for a brisk 30 minute walk (I stayed at home with the cat!) When she re did her readings the blood glucose had returned to normal.....well normal for her that is.

It seems walking is a miracle drug!!

I did randomly. I was suffering high blood pressure as high as 163/100 and pulse as high as 115 at one point, so decided to exercise and change my diet now i have it somewhat under control averaging 130/75 and average pulse of 85. But during the first few days of exercising with high blood pressure i took mine after doing a high intensity work out and it read 178/106 and pulse 119 thought i was going to have a heart attack from freaking out after so i don't recommend checking it lol

I do wonder why mine is so low after a walk. As low  as 100/58 or even lower [systolic anyway]. However it rises back to a normal level in half an hour or so. I only tried it to see why you shouldn't do it !!

Hi there so are you taking medication for your blood pressure?

Hey helen, no currently I'm not on any medication although my doctors probably will put me on some soon. My lifestyle change has been 2 weeks now and it's still averaging around 130/75 can't seem to get the top number down consistently. It's been as low as 117/67 at one point but never stays around there.

Well I was under the impression that they onlygive medication when the reading is constantly above 140/90, wonder what others think on this forum

I agree with you Helen. I think GP's prescribe medication for high bp when readings struggle to get below 140/90 although with me genetics played a part due to the incidence of strokes in my family.

I am off fishing this morning and intend to walk a few miles along the river with my spinning rod and combine fishing with exercise........not always thought of together!!
