Hi, this question is very dear to me!! I am a very keen/passionate cyclist and 4 weeks before my op (3.5 weeks ago) I was cycling 100 miles a week. I made a point of doing that, once I got my date!! I normally cycle (work permitting) 60-70 miles a week and once I got on my bike found no problems doing this mileage! I asked my physio at the pre-assessment check, when I would expect to be cycling again!! He told me 12weeks - to which I laughed!! (Sarcastically of course). However I am now driving, walking lots and at my 4 week appoint next week have been assured by my physio (post-op), that he will show me how to get on and off a static bike and start doing some cycling!! Can't wait - it's none weight bearing and guess it's going to be progress!! Think my pre-op physio thinks that it may be too dangerous to go out on roads!! We ll see!!

    Good luck

Yes, in fact it is part of therapy. It has to be the bike that sits you low while you push out the peddles in front of you instead of like sitting up on a seat with your feet peddling down like on a bicycle. Cannot remember the name of the machine.

I bought an inexpensive exercise bike 1 month post op and wish I'd had it pre op to strengthen muscles. I'd never used an exercise bike before so wasn't sure if it would comply with the 90 degree rule, but it's quite OK as your legs don't come up far. Had to assemble my bike which was a challenge both physically and mentally!! I was so tired afterwards I only managed to sit on the seat to check height was Ok. But the next day started riding with no resistance, e.g. Level 1.  I felt a great improvement in muscle strength and general fitness over the next few days and weeks. I'm sure the bike in addition to walking and hip exercises, has helped tremendously. When I felt ready I increased the resistance to level 2.

The great advantage of the exercise bike is being able to use it no matter what the weather is like. And once you feel tired, just stop and get off. No worries about getting home.

i get on and off using my unoperated leg to take full weight.  But now at 4 1/2 months post op it doesn't matter which leg.

    Go go for it!

I was using a stationary bike after 4 weeks, it really helped loosening up the tight thigh muscles

Thank you all for your replies. The answer sounds like an overwhelming 'yes'. Op due 30th June so not much time before but good for after I should think.
