Exercise induced GERD/LPR, does this happened to you?

Posted , 17 users are following.

My acid reflux is brought on mostly by exercise, I keep trying to exercise but it just makes me sicker and weaker. I have not had any tests yet other than my Dr telling me I have GERD and I am taking Omeprazole 40mg. My breathing is also affected so I can't take a deep breath, and it seems to also close up in my esophagus if I really push the exercise. Can anyone relate to this problem?

Hi Cheryl and everyone!  I hope everyone is doing well.  I am new to this site but it is reasurring to see people who are going through the same thing I am.  I will give you a small run down of the last two years of my life.  I started having swallowing problems 2 years ago, then the stomach buring and volcano in my chest feeling started.  I went to the gastro doc and had an endoscope done which showed only mild irritation.  I went through all the medications and nothing seemed to work.  I was finally put on generic Protonix 40mg twice a day which after a few weeks seemed to work but my swallowing issued was only improved and did not go away.  Then out of nowhere the acid reflux came back full force and I couldnt swallow anyting solid so I started taking Prevacid (opened the pill and mixed it with yogurt).  I went through weeks of hell and just wanted to give up.  I was prescribed zoloft because i do suffer from anxiety and panic attacks.  during this time i could barely move around without feeling out of breath and I could not take a deep breath at all.  I was also given aviatan which is a form of xanax.  I am here to say that there is hope.  I started taking the protonix in the morning, high quality probiotics and two 150mg Zantac at bed time.  After a few days I started to feel better.  I dont know if it was the combination of medication or what but I noticed my breathing became normal and I didnt even notice it anymore and I started bike riding which i have not done in forever because i always felt winded.  I kept thinking I had a heart problem or asthma or something serious.  I have felt so much better in the last few weeks and can actually swallow without much effort or stress.  I am not 100 percent better but things are looking up.  I started taking the protonix everyother day because i dont want to be on a PPI long term and it still seems to be working.  I want everyone to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel and do not give up.  I spent two years hating life and dreading waking up but everyday it gets better and better.  I hope you are doing well Cheryl.  Is the breathing getting any better?

Hi,Mike, Happy to hear you have found some relief especially with the breathing. I have not found any relief for my breathing issue but the meds seem to help with the globus and nausea. I take an antidepressant also and when I first took it my breathing kicked in. My breathing was like it was stuck and I couldn't get it going but that wore off pretty fast and then I couldn't breathe again. So I always thought the antidepressant helped my breathing but have never been able to recapture deep breathing again.

It will be interesting as you get off your PPI's to see if things get worse or better for you, I hope they get better. You give me hope, thanks!

Thanks for the words of encouragement Mike. I am getting anxious about heading into the holidays feeling like this. We will be traveling, seeing family, parties with friends and lots of talking, etc. I needed some encouraging words. I have LPRD and take 40 mg of Protonix daily. I am careful with diet and have my headboard on risers. But things are worse lately. Don't know why. I am grateful for what I can still do and your message made me hopeful that things will improve. Thanks!!

      Hi Mike,

Are you still feeling good?  Questions, did you take Xanax during your improvement or you stopped and still feeling well? Are you still taking Prevacid in the morning every other day and Zantac at night?
