Exercises

Hi everyone I keep reading about the exercises everyone keep doing on this forum. I I'd the exercises from a sheet I was given from the hospital for about six weeks I am now 11 weeks and the only exercise I do is walking wondering if this is enough? I have never been to a physio session at the hospital but having said that I have no pain just stiffness if I sit too long. I feel very fortunate

According to the experts and regardless of our present state walking is the best exercise for all. I used to be a gym user but with osteoporosis told to stop doing weights as bones not strong enough but to walk as much as possible. Cancelled gym and started walking daily outside. Lost weight and felt healthier both physically and mentally. Already at just past week 4 I am walking 4 miles most days albeit slowly. Treadmill in gym cannot replace the pleasure of being outside and enjoying nature and it is free. There are lots of rambling groups out there if you want company

Ruth that is what I love the discovery, new eateries and interesting people along the way - he, he I live close to the river Wey and meet lots of river users and interesting wildlife. I am a keen photographer and have snapped May flies emerging, mating bumble bees - now you do not get that in the gym. Of course camera on hold while I still have 2 crutches

    Hi Ruth

I had same physio as you lol ! None, only exercises in a booklet, the standing ones I found very difficult to do as i couldn't stand on my good leg cos of what may have been referred pain I now think, from using for support for my whole body for so long. I'm glad I didn't have any extra physio as I couldn't have got there or done it.

I am 12 weeks now, back at work and walking unaided, I have a slight limp after sitting and I can't sit for too long but that is all. Like Ann I love walking and love that i can do this at the weekends. I know I can walk 2 miles, I love nature and the countryside. I'm more than happy with that and my progress, I think maybe its the same as always there's no one fix for all. I too feel blessed that I can walk again.

If you're happy and no problems its obviously working for you too, my consultant just told me to go and walk, which is what I did.

    Hi Ruth

Walking is fab as is climbing stairs

    And

The exercise sheets I feel give some good stuff to continue with well after six weeks....personally worth considering. The should be an after op care service at your hospital....they can get a physio to talk to you...or better yet to see you....re wot is best for you.

Good luck....are you walkinng far? My phone has an app and I get it counting 5750 steps a day as a target! I plan an hours full walk next week.

I used to be a part time fitness instructor two evenings a week, as well as my day job as a legal secretary, so was pretty fit before I retired.  After I retired we moved house and I started swimming again instead and walking.  Also we had a Wii Fit which I did at home.  10 weeks after my hip op, I went back to swimming again and walking, both of which are good exercise.  I have not done as much Wii Fit as don't want to over stretch myself, but the step exercises on it are good.  If you are walking and doing the exercises which were given to you at the hospital, I don't see why you should worry too much.  If you like swimming, try that, but leave off the breaststroke action with the legs for about 6 months.  Seems to me you are doing okay.
