Exercises to improve balance

Posted , 3 users are following.

I am trying to improve my balance and have used the Yoga Tree Position. For the uninitiated, I stand on one leg and place my other foot against my calf.

Unfortunately, I tend to wobble, and these wobbles tend to make my right knee sore, although the left knee seems fine (I alternate positions).

Can anyone advise regarding this exercise?

Thanks

Ps. I have had no surgery or injuries on either knee

    Hi,

This Yoga exercise is a good one to improve your balance but there are other easier ones which will have the same result.  First of all, if your wobbling makes one knee sore, it might be a good idea to consult a physiotherapist.  It may also be useful to wear a knee support during exercising as a sore knee can lead to further problems.  This is as basic exercise to improve your balance: stand near a chair or table so you steady yourself if you can't keep the balance.  With both arms outstretched at should height (this makes balancing easier to start with) lift one foot off the ground. Before you do this find a spot in front of you or on the floor and keep looking at it during the balancing (this is part of a dancer's training) and it will help you keep your balance.  To start with do this for 10 seconds on each leg once or twice a day.  Then increase the time to up to 30 seconds or more but only if it is comfortable and your knee does not hurt.  Pain during exercise is often a sign for you to stop. As your balance becomes better you might want to drop your arms to your side or raise them above your head.  You can also start moving the leg that's off the floor in a gentle forward and backward motion.  All this will take time but is achievable.  The important thing is to remember that you do this in order to improve physically and not do any damage like hurting your knee.  The leg you stand on does not have to be totally straight if a slight bend in the knee is more comfortable.  I hope this is useful to you.

      Thank you.

I believe that it is the lateral movements at the knee when wobbling that has caused the trouble. I think that the exercise you describe will still introduce wobbling at the knee.

Can you also suggest an exercise that will remedy the slightly sore knee. I expect that this problem will resolve in time, providing that I avoid exercises that induce lateral wobbling at the knee.

      Best wishes

I am sorry I can't advise you further.  It might be best to seek specialist advice/examination, initially perhaps from your GP who may refer you to the appropriate specialist.  It is not advisable to do exercises that cause your knee to be sore.  Soreness in joints is an indication that there's possibly something is wrong and continuing with these exercise may exacerbate the problem.

    Kind regards.
