Exersize and herniated disc

I’m 15, I’ve had a herniated disc for about 3 months now, and all i want to do is be able to workout again. My back pain is still pretty bad (holding a plank hurts) but i really feel like I’m gaining weight even though I’m eating healthy so is there anything i could do to workout?? I was thinking maybe i could go swimming?

Swimming is a great idea. And riding a bike. No jogging or running. No heavy lifting! Don't strain your back. And don't do anything that increases your back pain. Good luck to you. And I wear a good back brace to hold the spinal bones steady. I wear a Mueller stretchy back brace. I highly recommend it.

Oh yes swimming will be great for core and back muscles, also a back or SI joint belt will help support you while you strengthen up your muscle, please take care of your back Iv had a lumbar fusion and I wouldn't want anyone to go through what me and my family have and still are😊

You need to take up Pilates, strengthening your core would help protect your back and is what every bad back patient needs. In fact, wearing a back brace encourages all those muscles to stay weak and flabby as you don't have to do anything with your core , the brace does it for you. However, starting with a plank is starting at way too advanced a level LOL. You need to start with the basics and work up to holding a plank or you will push that disc right out. A strong core will really help you get back to being able to do your daily life. As for a cardiac work out, swimming is really the best thing as it won't tax that back and will allow you to go all out to stress your heart as you do need to stay in shape. Someone else said bike, I would keep that at the gym, as in stationary, not cycling outside or in class-- too much for your back again. You want to work your heart for the cardio, not stress your back for it.
I am glad you want to exercise, the old adage of bedrest for a disc is no longer valid. Patients are sent now to physical therapy right away, instead of 6 weeks flat on their back. They often start in the pool if they are having trouble even walking so that they don't have to contend with gravity, but they are given weights to work with in the pool and are also given core exercises. You need to build that core back!! Go Pilates.
