Exhaustion

hi everyone.  Me again...I'm 8weeks post TKR and not doing too badly apart from the usual sleepless nights, stiffness and ache at back of knee, etc etc but I wondered if anyone else experiences getting  to about now (7pm) ish and feeling absolutely exhausted, and every part of my body hurting?  I had to go to bed this afternoon and slept for an hour but still feel dodgy.  Is it still my body recovering from the operation?  Lord knows how I'm going to be able to go back to work in four weeks time - not gonna happen.

Hi only had a small op bit constantly tired. It has been said that the anasectic stays in your system for months and the drugs you take makes you feel like this. Went for a small walk after 10 days but very tired now. Hope you feel better soon but don't think is unusual for you to be this tired . Regards Bev

Thanks Bev I didn't realize we are still processing the drugs. I'm taking cocodamol and ibuprofen and have been for years to be honest .  Operations are no picnic. X

Hi Elaine94716, I, too, am at 8 weeks and the exhaustion in the evening must be par for the course as I am experiencing the same.  At a dinner party last night at 9pm, I just told everyone that I was fading fast so everyone understood and the evening ended.  I was so tired.  Also, the sleepless nights are my biggest frustration.  I can walk around all day and feel good and then at night the muscles in my leg just seem to seize and I cannot get comfortable.  We must be at about the same point in the process.

Toni I was so pleased (if that's not being horrible) to hear that you are the same!  I've got friends who keep asking me to go out for an evening but I can't do it !  We are about at the same stage my op was 9 March.  The nights are so annoying aren't they.  I can't remember when I last had a full night sleep. I am 6 days ahead of you and I too am exactly the same. I can potter about the garden all afternoon then as soon I come indoors and relax I just want to sleep. Body is totally exhausted then I get restless leg syndrome it's terrible. It's worse since my surgery does anyone else have this? Tgen come tge sleepless nights.

I am nearly 8 weeks post op & feel that I am going backwards at the moment with my right knee very stiff again.  My legs get the restless leg syndrome plus the aching from my knee down to my ankle. and yes, I m so tired in the evenings I just have to go to bed.

Hi, my op was March 6th, seems theres a few of  us at roughly the same stage - we should be called "The Mad Marchers" or something!

Its such a comfort to hear others are experiencing the same sort of things as me. I seem to get on pretty well in the day, and can get some stuff done, but come the evening Im totally wiped out. And then cant sleep! Poor Hubs comes in from work and asks how I am, and its always the same answer - "Tired out and in pain" sad Its getting to the point where my answer will just be "Fine thanks" as I fed up of explaining why, all these weeks later, Im still struggling.....

Take care all you Marchers, we'll get throught his together! xx

Hi Terri and Andrea. We should keep in touch and continue to support each other as we are all at the same stage.  I still can't come down stairs properly and have now developed a back ache (although my back has never been great as I slipped a disc 30 years ago). So I now take pills to get rid of the back and the knee pain! It is encouraging to hear you all getting the same as me though, keep up the good work!  X

A TKR isnt a minor bit of surgery. It is major surgery Of course you are still recovering from it. Because you can walk & do exercises doesnt meen that everything should be sorted. It will take a few more weeks yet

Im 7.5 mths & can now walk over 3 miles, have some muscle pain but some nights wake up because of my knee. I must turn onto my back and my knee goes straight with the muscles objecting. It'll go Ill just give it time and TIME heals so just wait

That's very encouraging to hear that you walk 3 miles.  I was totally unprepared for how long and hard this journey would be. I don't fancy having my other knee done now! X

Oh yes - sound normal to me and many others on this site. Hopefully things will start to get better in terms of exhausttion once everything is less of an effort. Four weeks can make a big difference but if you are not ready to go back see if you can get a phased return or put it off another 2 weeks. I am 15 weeks tomorrow and only now do I feel I should be back at work (even though I went back ages ago) and am still tired in the evenings bit definitely improving physically and mentally. 11 weeks was a hard week for me but everyone's body is different in their ability to recover so listen to your body - it's tired!

Thanks Caroline, I think I will need more time, I can't even stay out all day yet let alone commute to work for 8 o'clock and not get home till 6. I think I might have to rethink my job.  Even after a phased return it seem iossible to me at the moment.  Although perhaps I will feel better in a few weeks time.  Her very brave going back at 11 weeks.
