Exhaustion after Pneumonia and pulmonary embolism

Posted , 5 users are following.

Two weeks ago I was admitted to hospital with a mild PE and pneumonia. Antibiotics finished 5 days ago and did the job on the pneumonia as lungs are clearer on xray. I'm on 15mg x2 daily rivaroxaban blood thinner and the pain from the PE has now gone.

However - Its now two weeks later and I am completely exhausted and can barely get out of bed. Didn't get dressed today and cant believe this is right. Is Rivaroxaban wiping me out, or is this 'normal'? I feel a complete mess.

Thanks for any info

    This is what I found

Check with your doctor right away if you have a decreased urine output, confusion, dizziness, nausea, rapid weight gain, swelling of the face, ankles, or hands, or unusual tiredness or weakness after receiving the medicine. These may be symptoms of a serious kidney problem.

Also said do not stop suddenly as increased risk of blood clot

So contact your doctor and explain your problems.Hope this helped

I had multiple PEs and felt shattered for a while afterwards, I didn't leave my house for ages after, apart from to go to the hospital. Going up and down stairs would really make me out of breath and I had palpitations and breathlessness for up to a year after. Your body is recovering from both pneumonia and a PE both of which can kill you so it may take some time to recover. I would recommend trying a different anticoagulant. I couldn't tolerate the blood thinning tablets because of the horrendous side effects, so I swapped to tinzaparin injections and was much better on them. Phone your doctor and explain your symptoms, they may want to do some blood tests. If everything is ok with the results, ask if you can try another anticoagulant, rivaroxaban and apixiban were really bad for me. I had really bad side effects on them. If you don't want to try injections maybe try edoxaban tablets.

Many thanks for some reassurance. What side effects did you have? I was on clexane injections before pe and pneumonia which weren't pleasant but no side effects. Now on rivaoxaban.

on rivaroxaban I had terrible headaches, nausea to the extent I found it hard to eat, green diarrhoea, I needed to wee all the time, dizziness, numbness and tingling and really bad anxiety. on apixiban my appetite came back and the diarrhoea stopped, but I had screaming headaches, numbness, tingling, needed to wee a lot, dizziness, increased anxiety and crushing chest pains to the extent I had to get another CT to see if the PEs were back but they were dispersing. The day after I started the injections my anxiety and the pain had almost completely gone. I would say I started to feel much more normal after about 5 days. I just didn't feel like me when I was on the tablets if you know what I mean. Obviously I had a couple of side effects like painful lumps and bruises and mild headaches just after the injections, but I started to be able to normal things again like go food shopping or take the dog for a walk. It doesn't sound like much, but I couldn't even do that when I was on the tablets.

good luck. You can get some anti sickness tablets, but they make you feel really tired.

As Moon said this will take some time. Take it easy and you should see improvement soon but it will take a long while before your 100%.
