Experience & Advice

I thought it was essential that I gave my views on Sertraline as I have been taking the Drug now for almost a Decade. For me Personally its improved my life 10 Fold, I would always advise that you have confidence in your GP if Perscribed this drug, and ensuring that you research that it is the correct medication for what your experiencing. I will be as honest and frank as I can - Firstly this drug is highly addictive and in that sense I mean the come downs if not taking it as prescribed are unpleaseant, there have been times where I have been ill and forgot about taking my sertraline until I started getting come down symptoms, these include very bad electric shock sensations in my head, extreme tiredness, confusion, headaches and feeling sluggish. this to me is the only down side to this medication. I have had various side effects and still do that includes insomnia, sweats, occasional twitches.

I have had GPs that have tried to take me off this medication, but I know and have explained to them the impact it would have on my life if taken off them. This medication Changed my life for the better, it took me along time to adjust and accept the fact that its what I need, but life experience on this medication and what has done for me gave me the answers I needed. I would not advise this as a short term use medication as the withdrawals will take at least a week and they are very unpleasant and you probably wont go any further than out of your home once experiencing them. I do hope that this is of use to someone, and would gladly assist anyone if they have any further questions.

Its mostley the insomnia that bothers me, how do you deal with it? I agree I must persevere with seraltine to get the benefits . what are you on them for depression anxiety or both? thank you for the advice.

I don't deal with the insomnia to be honest, im a natural night owl, so staying up half the night is what im used to, I do go for employment that is unsociable hours as that has been the easiest way to overcome it for me, I don't agree with sleeping tablets as I want a quality of life. Im on sertraline for a whole host of reasons but I don't really want to put it on a public forum. I cant sing the praises enough if this medication is right for you, I dread to think where I would be now without it :-) xx

    Hi Pat

I have been on Sertraline for 3 years now, I too have founds it has changed my life !

I know exactly what you are saying about the side affects, But I wouldn`t say I am addictive ,as I could Stop it tomorrow,But stopping would be the end of my marriage and I would probably lose my job.The drug has helped my mood swings, temper, depression and OCD these are just a few of the problems I have.

I have found that exercise has helped me to sleep,And cutting caffein out in Tea coffee,Chocolate makes a difference, Eatting a healthy diet will also help. : )

When I say addictive I mean the term loosely as the withdrawrals are not pleasant, so please to hear that the medication has also made a positive impact on your life :-)

Sertraline -Prozac - didn't suit me. I was put on it during a bad bout of Depression when I simply could not stop crying. I cried constantly for nearly 3 weeks!

It blew me up like a balloon. That was not acceptable to me.
