Experience of manipulation under anaesthesia.

Hi all, I have been confirmed as frozen shoulder with an mri confirming no underlying significant injury and specialist has booked me in for manipulation under anesthesia. What I do know is that I will be out whilst he manipulates my joint and then he will inject cortisone and saline into the joint. I appreciate there will be an increase in pain initially, but wondered has anyone out there had experience and can offer advice and recovery time.

Hi just posting my diary on mua.

Day of procedure I was given general anesthetic and a local it took around 15 mins, woke up in pain nut this was soon controlled with 2 doses of morphine and liquid tramadol all via the canula. I stayed in hospital for about 5 hours afterwards and was discharged with tramadol, co-codamol and ibuprofen. I have to admit that the pain was pretty horrendous and i felt appalling all day and into the next. I also saw a physiotherapist and took away 7 sets of exercises that i do every 3 hours but notthe point of pushing through the pain.

It is the day after now and I am taking the tablets religiously as without these I know I couldn't do the exercises or be comfortable. I have to say that I have a much improved rom apart from the hand behind my back so I remain hopeful that when it all settles down I will retain the movement. I steel feel pretty dreadful but some of that is due I am sure to the tablets, that said they are controlling the pain so not complaining. I have also noted that my shoulder is very hot to the touch and I am also using ice, in addition the pain I used to get in my bicep and elbow has significantly diminished and is now more in the shoulder only.

Finally looks like the injections were given both front and back of the shoulder.

Day 3, main thing today is the pain is considerably worse, I put that down to the same as when you overdo it in the gym or exercise where its worst after a few days. Well thats what I am hoping. I am still doing physio but have to say its getting much harder and the pain at rest is much worse, no reduction so far in the rom I achieved after the manipulation apart from over my head and behind my back pulling arm up, these just seem impossible to maintain movement. Still taking pain relief to cope and allow exercises.

days 4, 5 & 6. The movement is better in terms of range compared to pre mua, however it is still remarkably painful. I have been told that I must now push as far as possible using the improved rom that I have, this is really painful as I am really forcing my arm through passive range using my good arm or via my body weight against a wall etc. If I can keep this up and possibly improve my rom further then physio has advised he will start strength training in a few weeks, I am genuinely pushing to the limit and its a good job I have strong pain relief. Sleeping is still eluding me somewhat and I awake at least 3 to 4 times a night sometimes giving up completely and reading.

I asked myself today if I would do the mua again and honestly I am not sure at this point as the pain is really an issue, espevially on the physio. I appreciate there is no point in mua without the physio later as I need to improve and maintain rom but its really hard.

    Good luck to anyone affected.
