Extreme groin pain after dislocation of THR

I had a TLHR on January 28, 2017 with HUGE success!  I was only 41 at the time of the surgery...I was pain free and walking without assistance within a month and a half of the surgery.  My doctor and therapist were ecstatic at how quickly I bounced back and healed.  Fast forward to January 9, 2018...I fell on my icy driveway and dislocated my THR!  It took 3 doctors and 2 facilities to be able to put it back in because my muscles were so tight (my doc told my husband that is a good thing...doesn't appear to be anymore though!?!?).

Three weeks later, I was out walking and it partially popped out, stopping me in my tracks.  Within 30 secs, it popped itself back in.  This happened on 2 other occasions while I was walking.  At my one month after dislocation appointment, my doctor took x-rays and said everything looked good.  When I told him about the partial dislocations, he told me my strides were too big, so I became conscientious about how I was walking.  It happened one more time after that while I was walking about 2 months later (3 months post dislocation).

A few weeks ago (approx. 4 months post dislocation), I was standing talking with my husband, with all of my weight on my left leg.  I mentally told myself I should not stand like that, but did anyway rolleyes, and alas, it popped out again!

Today (almost 5 months post dislocation), I started getting EXTREME groin pain on the left side.  Has anyone else had a similar experience with the same symptoms and if so, did you find out what the groin pain is from approximately 5 months post dislocation?

Wow...I’d be interested to know the final outcome as well. My pain is strictly in my groin...no thigh or hip pain. I hope that’s not the case with mine, as I am only 1 1/2 yrs post op!

I have to get my right hip done also...was scheduled for end of Jan 2018. Well, I blew that out of the water when I dislocated my THP the beginning of Jan! Now I’m not even thinking about getting the other one done until I get this one stabilized and under control!

Please try to keep me posted on your issue.

Oh wow that sounds absolutely awful, my physio told me any groin pain is an issue with the hip and other pain anywhere else is muscle issues. Part of my physio exercise is to start leaning all my weight on my op side as far as I know this should be a perfectly normal thing to do.. This isn't fair on you and your quality of life I'd be constantly worried.. How did it dislocate if the muscles were so strong? X

My doctor said it was the way I landed on it and the force of the fall. There was nothing to brace myself on so I fell full force on it and it happened so fast. When I fell, my knee was bent with my leg at a 90 degree angle out to the side, so I landed directly on my pelvis/hip.  I have no clue how I managed to move my leg to get it in front of me to be honest. It was the worst pain of my life. I think it keeps popping out because the scar tissue has not fully  rescarred and each time it pops out, it’s a step backwards. :-( That’s not good news that it’s the hip if it’s groin pain.  I go see pain management next month for my other hip, so maybe I’ll get more answers from him.

Wow! How scary this seems. Sorry for what you're going through. It really seems to me that something is not right with your hip replacement. You might want to get a second opinion from a different doctor. This in no way sounds normal to me. Good luck!

Thank you! I go see pain management for my other hip in June so I will talk to him. If he doesn’t know, I will definitely go see someone else.

Hello! I’m sorry you are in pain. Both before and after my THR I had extreme groin pain. Turned out to be iliopsoas tendonitis. (Afterwards). I am finally out of pain, but I wonder if this is causing your pain due to compensation from other hip?

Best of luck, I will say a prayer for you!

Yeah, iliopsoas tendonitis, maybe ripped your psoas muscle.

"When I fell, my knee was bent with my leg at a 90 degree angle out to the side"

      That will do it alright.

When you go to your doctor ask him/her to palpitate your psoas muscle, if that's it, when he presses down on your psoas muscle you'll know immediately. Any skilled phyisical therapist can also palpitate your psoas muscle. It has now been 6 months and it hasn't healed, which means it is not going to heal on it's own. You'll probably need surgery on that as now you have scar tissue on the tendon and/or psoas muscle. Think of it as ripping a tendon, literally a rip, little tears into the tendon.

Your description sounds awful, but plausible. LOL Thank you so much for all that info.  I’ll definitely have a lot of questions for my doctor now!

Hey Victoria78386, I know so much about that groin pain. It seems like theirs nothing the Dr. can do but give you more pills and more creams that don’t work. If you find something that work please pass it on to me. Feel better.
