EXTREME [pain during cystoscopy

Is it just me, or is cystoscopy an extremely painful procedure for everyone.  I have had two of these over the last 25 years.  The first time had to be pain the equivalent of childbirth.  The second time -- just as bad, and both times administered under no kind of anesthesia.  I'd liken the pain to scraping the urethra with a razor probe.  For this reason I fear catheterization if I ever require it.

Is anesthesia practical for this procedure?  Any experiences to share?

Signed,

Super-sensitive Urethra Guy

Was your cystoscopy performed with a rigid cystoscope or a flexible fiber-optic one? I've had 2 done in the past both with a flexible cystoscope and their was no problem at all. The doctor just sprayed a little numbing solution on the tip of the penis and then I watched the whole passage on a monitor by my head. The whole process took less than one minute and was totally pain free.

At my second Foley cathing, the ER cathing nurse suggested that I ask for Ativan(sp?) before another insertion.  He said that my anxiety caused my spincter to lock up.  He demo'd what muscles do when a blood test needle is inserted in the arm.  Also, he said that its possible that my anxiety caused bleeding when a doc pulled out my first Foley earlier that day.  Btw, I lost a lot of blood, and my blood pressure went down to 120's Systolic.

I have had 3 cystoscopies in the last year and experienced zero pain. There was slight discomfort and a feeling of pressure but no pain. Lidocaine was inserted into the urethra and allowed to work for a couple minutes before the cystoscope was inserted. I assume this is the standard procedure.

.. with the very-thin, flexible 'scope?

      Why 3 times?
