Extreme sedative effacts of quetiapine

I have been on Q about 3 months. I have described elsewhere the sedative effects which I am finding severely affecting my daytime activities. I have been prescribed 100mg to take daily but this makes me have up to 12 hours sleep. So to reduce this I generally take 50mg.

I find that even taking that in the evening it severely reduces my ability to take part in my daily activities. I don't work (and I couldn't do so on this and mirtazapine) but I do voluntary work and I have other things that I do.

This week I had early appointments from Tuesday to Friday. On Tuesday I had my am choir practice. I took 50mg Q in the evening. Still I couldn't get up in the morning. Missing my Tue activities made me feel really depressed.

Wed I had to get up at 7am for a 9.30 course start. So I felt that I couldn't take Q. Then on Thu I also had an am bank appointment which I needed to be fully awake for. So I didn't take any Q again.

Then on Fri I had an early GP appt. Ironically to discuss my problems with taking Q. I decided though that I would take q to draw attention on the effects of this to my GP. The GP said that I should discuss this with my consultant. I wouldn't say that my consultant doesn't listen to me but... My sister is a GP and she said that I should speak to my GP - I told my own GP this. He said that he would write something on my notes. Then I had a briefing about doing some voluntary work. There I made some ill-advised remarks which I wonder if I did because I was on Q.

My sister seems to think that I should go on to Valproate instead.

Hi Nick, quetiapine is an amazing tablet, but if the sedation is being a problem, talk to your phyciatrist about the possibility of a tablet called Abilify. Its more costly but doesnt have the sedative effects. I find with my anxiety the sedative effects help. Also check if you are on the short release or on the XR  version of quetiapine which is the slow release quetiapine. Gook luck, Rob

Thanks Rob. I am seeing my consultant in 3 weeks. We will see but if I have realappointments rather than classes etc it makes it really difficult.

Excuse me for replying to myself. Today I was at a discussion on talking therapy. Not really on topic but for some reason I mentioned the difficulties I have with quetiapine regarding its sedative effects without mentioning Q by name (NB If I am not doing anything I am fine with the sedative effects - I just potter around at home). Anyway there was a student OT there who proceeded to describe the precise symptoms that I experience but mentioning Q by name. I nearly dropped through the floor!

Telling me, I have gone off the slow release q, and back on 200g q.

I take it a 8pm and cant function until 11am the next day.
