Extreme/severe facial bloating ONLY when smiling with mouth open. What is this?

I looked this up on google but I can't find anything to do with facial bloating only when smiling with one's mouth open. Any ideas what this is, what can cause this and why?

21, asian, female, I drink a lot of water.. about 8-10 glasses a day. I don't really eat salty foods very much and my celiac disease blood testing and food allergy testing all came back negative for everything. I've been dealing with this issue for almost 2 years, with no change, except maybe a little worse. I know I should see a doctor, but if you have any inkling or ideas of what this could be, that'd be very appreciated.

    Hi

You could try a lymph drainage massage, even 5 minutes a day would help. 🤔

I do actually! It helps a little bit with my overall face shape when not smiling, but it doesn't help my bloating with my mouth open.

I dont think you have facial bloating at all.   Its just the way you are and when you smile your cheeks are slightly accentuated.  If you are at all overweight it may help to lose a few pounds but to me you look absolutely OK.

You may be trying to look perfect, but most of us are not perfect beauties. Dont worry about it...you are fine.

It probably doesn't look as bad because I covered up my eyes and forehead, which really accentuate how bad and unnatural the lower part of my face looks. It's definitely bloated and unnatural because it wasn't like this a few years ago. And every now and then.. I mean super rare.. it won't be bloated and it'll look fairly normal for about an hour. I'm 5'3 and 112 lb.

Your BMI is absolutely fine so you are certainly not overweight. Does this occur around the time of your period? Do you feel bloated in general at that time? If so your doctor may suggest taking diuretics at this time.

Have you looked carefully at your Mother's face and your Father's?  Also brothers/sisters/aunts/uncles. Do they seem to have bloated faces? It could be hereditary.

As we grow, our faces go through several changes, and at 21 your face is still growing so you may just lose what you call bloating eventually. Do you have a close friend who can give you their honest opinion of whether your face is bloated or not?

Do you have any trouble breathing through your nose? ie blocked sinuses? That can make faces puffy.

You could try some facial exercises like blowing out your cheeks, thenopening your mouth as wide as possible and then grimacing with your mouth as wide as possible, then make an OOO shape with your lips Do each one 3 times slowly and deliberately a couple of times a day. Look in a mirror while you do it and watch the muscles in your face working.

Finally, did you change makeup about 2 years ago? Could it be a mild reaction to something you put on your skin?

I wonder why you have called yourself grossloser?

Hi Marina, thanks for all your questions smile Unfortunately, no the bloatedness is all the time. Every single day for the past 2ish years. Every now and then for an hour or so it is not bloated.. this happens maybe 1x a week.

I was adopted from China and there are no records of my birth family, so anything that could be hereditary I wouldn't know.

I have a boyfriend, and he even says that it's really bloated and unnatural and I should see a doctor.

I don't have any trouble breathing through my nose. However, I do have mild symptoms of sleep apnea.

I do facial exercises a lot, but I will definitely try the ones you suggested!

I don't wear makeup actually, and I never have. I've never understood how it works or how to do it, and never wanted to spend the money on it.

Haha, because I think I'm a gross loser. Anyway, thanks for your response! smile

Oh dear,I hoped something would help.      Its possible it is a glandular problem but I think you should visit a doctor to have a discussion.
