Extremely painful hiatus hernia

Hello.

I was diagnosed with a 5cm rolling hiatus hernia back in February after 2 years of being told nothing is wrong. Since then, it's been incredibly painful and I've now been on 4 different medications for it. I'm currently trying out Espmeprazole which I've yet to feel any benefit from.

I'm currently waiting for the pressure test, to check my eligibility for surgery but in the meantime I don't know what else I can do. I do EVERYTHING - even the pepermkntr tea, peptac, antacids etc.

Does anyone else have a rolling hernia? How do you cope?

Hi So sorry you are having problems. I have a number of conditions incl H hernia. Unfortunately Drs often deny hernia is the cause of pain. I was told they should only cause reflux and the effects of that. I have had acupuncture and chiro treatment with some relief. Also eating smaller meals more frequently. Walking around after meals and nothing late at night plus a wedge pillow helps a bit.

The other thing is light abdo massage from the sternum downwards using some blended aromatherapy oils which relaxes the tension. Drinking water first thing and then raising and dropping on the heels or similar is reckoned to use gravity to help the hernia slide down into where it should be. No prolonged bending down or heavy lifting. All these are not cures but help the symptoms. Good luck.

A rolling hiatus hernia is different than a sliding hiatus hernia. I had surgery for a rolling hiatus hernia. When you mention pain , what kind of pain are you talking about? I never had a pressure test but had a CT scan of my abdomen and a endoscopy. I lost 15 pounds before surgery and another 5 after. I had many sessions of burping and was very anemic from the hernia rubbing and causing internal bleeding. I ate very small meals and avoided many fatty foods. Sometimes I would get very sharp pains like a heart attack. Those frightened me. I didn't have acid reflux. I had the surgery at age 68. Before I had surgery I went to emergency 4 times with indigestion, burping and high blood pressure , over 225. I had lots of gas.

I coped by listening to some relaxation tapes, reading all I could about my condition and eating carefully and small amounts. Sometimes I didn't cope so well.

The pain feels really raw, and whenever I eat or drink anything it just scratches as it goes down. I also have acid reflux no matter what I do, I can have peptac (gaviscon), omeprazole, or peppermint tea but sometimes it's not enough as the acid just comes right back up in to the back of my throat. I also get a pain centre to my chest and back, with a hot stabbing sensation

All of the acid reflux RX's, pepsid, did nothing for me except cause my blood pressure to go to 190 and caused my hair to start falling out. I also had GERD, so no matter what I ate or did not eat, the results were always the same, no relief from the acid, and my esphogas became inflamed.

I had the surgery to repair the hiatal hernia and the valve,(which is what causes GERD).

That was 3 months ago. Thankfully no more acid reflux or hiatal hernia. Find a good GI SPECIALIST and a good GI SURGEN. God's Healing and Blessings to you.

Don't know if my hiatal hernia was a rolling type-- but it was huge!   I had my surgery back on Dec., 22 and spent 5-1/2 hours in the operating room.   Was told that if I didn't have the surgery, the hernia would have eventually strangled me.   So, I didn't want that to happen, so went through with the surgery.   Still have stomach problems from time to time- but, fortunately, not everyday.    I continue to eat lots of soups, jello, ice cream, yogurt..... mostly simple foods.    Hope that your medical condition will improve.    Keep in touch, please.

    Snoog,

yes, you had a rolling or paraesophageal hernia, same as me. Par meaning beside so paraesophageal , beside the esophagus. I still have a few digestive issues but am not in fear of my life any more after surgery. I was so anemic from internal bleeding and worried about the strangulation issue. I am very busy and active again and will celebrate my 70 th birthday in August. Most foods I can eat and found most of the weight I had lost before surgery. Life is good again.
