Eye scratch / corneal abrasion — how long for vision to stabilize?

Posted , 4 users are following.

Four days ago, I suffered a corneal abrasion on my left eye. It hurt like hell for about 3 days, and now on the 4th day, it seems that the pain is totally gone. I've gone to the ophthalmologist, and he reckoned that it was nothing serious—a 2-3mm abrasion.

However, it's now day 4 and the pain is gone but I'm seeing no real improvement in my vision. It's still quite damn blurry and makes reading harder when both of my eyes are open. I have, then, a few questions:

  • How likely is it for an abrasion that heals in 4 days to permanently affect vision?
  • How long does it usually take after pain to subside for vision to re-stabilize?

I'd be grateful if anyone has experience with this!

It will heal. just relax, eat well, drink lots of water, sleep and your body will heal. when it does come back and give an update so that others can learn from you

Many times with a corneal abrasion they need to remove part of the corneal surface that was affected in order for it to be smooth again. I had a corneal abrasion awhile ago and saw an optometrist who said it would be fine. About a month later I started having pain again and went to an ophthalmologist who said it should have had the outer layer taken off as it is already damaged. Im wondering if the same might be true for you and you are looking through the scraped up tissue and thats why your vision is not clear yet. The eye heals very quick compared to most parts of the body. Best of Luck!

Its probably blurry because you are looking through the abrasion. As long as you have no pain then its probably OK. If you wish to get some drops called Hypromellose/artificial tears you may find that helps the healing process but your natural tears should be enough. Just give it time.
