Hi I have been struggling with dry eyes now my mouth feels dry to. I also feel tired alot. Could this be the start of sjogrens syndrome. Or is it too difficlt to diagnose even by a gp?

Dhi Mark. It is difficult to diagnose but not impossible of course. You need to speak to them and ask for some blood checks...inflammatory markers and so on. Do you have any joint pain or other issues?
In the end it needs a specialist for diagnosis. Maybe a rheumatologist or an oral immunologist. There are standard tests which can be done. Of course it doesn't always show up. Sometimes diagnosed on history. Do you have a good gp?

Yes that is right but I have Behcet's. Very similar diagnosed on history and symptoms. Blood work often unremarkable. Diagnosis is still possible. I did have various 'smoking gun' symptoms.

SS is almost impossible to diagnose as the tests used are poor and not sensitive or specific. Some 40-50% of SS sufferers test negative to all current tests. From your symptoms there is a very high chance you have Ss there are vey few other things that present with these symptoms. I say this as a SS sero negative sufferer with a PhD in medical science and someone who has found that all medics are crap when it comes to SS. For a start most will say you can't have it as you are male

Worse than that Maragret they don't actually care. All they care about other than the money is cancer heart disease and since the charity hit the headlines with Cameron Altzheimers. An immunologist said to me recently "we don't care about any disease that doesn't kill you and I know nothing about SS and care nothing"

GP just don't know enough to make a diagnosis, I'm a retired nurse and I would strongly suggest that you get to a rheumatologist. Not just for a correct diagnosis, but the correct and helpful medications and treatment for that illness. Best of luck to you. Hang in there.

Hi Mark,
First of all, it is possible to be male and have Sjogrens. I have a family member who is male and had Sjogrens. Traditional doctors are typically not trained in preventative medicine which is why they often are at a loss about what you do when it comes to Sjogrens. They have been educated to treat symptoms only. The good news is that there are naturopaths who can help you treat the autoimmune disease through natural means so that there are no bad side effects, should you choose that route. I received my diagnosis through a blood test at rheumatologist's office. The doctor recommended medications, but I looked for other options. IF I were you, I would go to see a doctor first and rule out any other possibilities or confirm the diagnosis. Then you can choose to tackle it through medications or lifestyle changes. Best of luck!

I meant to say that my male family member "has" Sjogrens. And I just remembered that a former neighbor of mine, her husband had it, very advanced, before they figured out what it was.

Hi Mark, What ever the cause of your eye dryness is look after them ! Larilube at night, Visco tears first thing AM , the hylo forte and cheep dry eyes or refressing eyes during the rest of the day .that regimen works well for for me. I now avoid contact lenses, not worked out what to do about skiing this season maybe prescription gogles.... aaarrrggg - pricey ! Apparently biotene is good for mouth but in the interim sips of water very often.
