Eyesight deteriorating rapidly

18 months ago I had a cataract surgery on my right eye. the left eye was ok at the time, but about two months ago, the left eye started to deteriorate and I felt it was time for a second cataract replacement.
I visited my optician and he said that I didn't quite meet the criteria for cataract referral. However after some discussion he agreed to refer me.
Three weeks ago, I went for the assessment at the eye hospital and they agreed to do the operation and I am booked in for next week. However I was also advised that my right eye was starting to cloud over and I would probably need yag laser treatment in the future. Apparently this is quite common after cataract surgery.
Over the past few weeks since visiting the hospital, my vision has deteriorated rapidly in both eyes. I called my optician, asking to be referred for yag laser treatment, but they just refused as they said my eyesight was OK when they checked it a few weeks ago. They said that as I was booked in for a check four weeks after cataract surgery, there was no need for further checks at this time.
Yesterday I decided I wasn't fit to drive any more as I couldn't read number plates at the required distance, so I handed the car keys over to my wife.
I'm hoping the cataract surgery next week will at least restore my left eye, but at the back of my mind I'm worried at how rapidly my vision is deteriorating and I wonder if there could be another cause for this.
As my regular optician refuses to see me, I'm wondering if I should seek a second opinion at another optician, or should I just wait another week until I have had the second cataract surgery.
