Eyesight Issues after Cataract Surgery

Posted , 39 users are following.

I had cataract surgery 1 week ago and the lens fitted corrected my astigmatism. On my follow up appointment 2 days post surgery I was told everything was as expected and my eye was now -1 instead of -5 prior to the surgery.

I explained to the consultant that whilst everything was clearer (well it should be once the cataract was removed) I am getting blurred vision and it feels like I can see the edge of the new lens. He totally dismissed this and did not even provide an explanation. I believe the new lens is not fitted correctly but cannot prove otherwise.

Has anyone else had (or heard of anything similar) to this?

Thanks

Yes John. I also see the edge of lense, I mentioned this to Doc. He said my lense was perfectly centred.. So not to worry..

Did you accept this or have you challenged it further. I actually feel worse off than when I had the cataract. I get terrible glare at night with car lights and sodium street lights its unbearable

I am seen on a regular basis with an RS for a retinal issue with my other eye.. I have spoken to him about this post cataract problem. I have not had a satisfactory answer either..

As for the light Glare. I also suffered from this.. It was found that I had some membrane growing over the new lense., I Was given Yag Laser to remove it..no more Glare..hope you get some help with yours.

John I can see the edge of my lens too but you learn to ignore it.

The lens that was removed, had a natural filter, which adjusted your vision according to glare etc..  Your artificial lens does not have a filter, so you might prefer to wear tinted specs.

Personally I wear specs with photochromic lenses and I have a pair of sunglassses with very dark lenses.

I am pleased with my implant.

Had this several years ago wrong type and size of lens, eventually referred to Moorfields, correct lens fitted been great since. Stick up for yourself do not allow them to tell you what you can see demand a second opinion as is your entitlement.

Thanks guys all comments appreciated. Trevor, I agree totally with your views. I tried to get an appointment with the consultant who performed the surgery and the earliest he can get me in is 28 Nov. I was advised to go along to the local eye hospital (to be on the safe side) and was told by the person the that the lens looks central. When I asked about the size of the lends she said they are one size fits all - I asked why measurements were taken prior to surgery if that was the case - she could not provide a reasonable response. I am sure some of theses people make it up as they go along.

I will keep you posted as to any development.

      Thankjs

      John

I am interested to hear that you went to Moorfields. I had cataract surgery 6 months ago at Southampton eye unit. Although my sight is vastly improved, I am sure they have damaged my eylid inside, or done something to it. I have been having trouble ever since, they all say it is ok. That is when I can get an appointment. (down there it is like trying to get an appointment with the prime minister). I have seen some of them privately now to try to resolve the situation, but I believe they may all be protecting each other, and am thinking of going up to Moorfields, and paying privately. My query to you is, who did you see? Did you feel the care/interest was superior to where you had been originally, and any other advice you feel would help me.

      Hi Bumblebea,

I had laser treatment a week ago for membrane left after cataract surgery 3 months ago.  It hasn't made the slightest difference.  I was beginning to think that maybe incorrect lens fitted until I read your post.  I now think maybe damage was done to the inside of my eyelid as that's where I feel like there is something constantly in my eye. As it's been 5 months since you posted this, I was wondering how things are now, have you been to see anyone, has the problem been rectified, what was said etc. I really would like to hear from you.

I'm in US. But perhaps Mark Wilkins could refer me to someone in states who is as adept at solving this issues as he is, or at least provide me with appropriate knowledge to better pursue a knowlegable doc on my own. Where is Moorfields and do you know how I might send him a letter or email? Thank you for any info you feel willing to provide.

Hi John, this is my first post here on this forum and I can identify with some of the problems with others as well as your own.

I am 57 and I had my right cataract done on 15th Oct 2014 (2/12 months now). All was going well and I saw clearly from that eye as soon as the patch came off. Then, after 12 days I had the stitch removed and the specialist put some type of gel in my eye. All was good UNTIL 2 hours after... I was starting to get a really sore and scratchy eye although putting the drops and ointment in as required.

I put up with this for the next day as I thought it's something I had to go through. Then, I was getting a bit scared as I felt like I had been hit in the eye with a bat ! I rang the specialist's surgery and spoke with the girl at the desk and she told me to leave it for the night and see how it would be in the morning... I woke up constantly sneezing and not being able to open my eye as it was really sensitive to light and it was just too painful... my head in that quadrant of my face was feeling really heavy and inflamed... but not only that, I was experiencing the sight of the lens from the inside looking out... almost like a shimmering circle that glistened whenever there was a light source infront and above me.

When I went to see the doc, he treated me for inflammation with no explanation as to why (probably allergic to that gel he put it my eye when he removed the stitch) and I received that treatment with 2 different types of drops constantly for up to 2 months which has now cleared.

When bringing up the problem of seeing the "ring" he just shrugged it off and said in a joking way... some other old guy sees colours !! That remark didn't help me at all... an he never explained what it was all about... I don't think he knows.

I had my left eye done on 10th Dec 2014 (3 weeks ago) and I have not experience the same inflammation... yet, I now see the rings in "both" eyes in certain sources of light (usually when the atmosphere is more dim, like evenings).

I went to a function before Christmas and as it was in the late afternoon, the hall was lit up and all I could see infront of me were two lenses that were shimmering on the outer edges... most distracting and I don't know what to do if the doc doesn't want to hear about it. I don't think it's something my eyes are going to get use to them as the rings are always there when evening comes along and we settle to watch TV and all of a sudden I have to turn out all the lights as I can't stand it.

I also must say, I don't know if I've done the right thing by having the surgery as the doc said initially that I wouldn't need glasses for distance any longer with just the need for readers. My vision has drastically changed from the first day after surgery with a marked deterioration in the right eye now and the left has NEVER been clear since the surgery. I feel really let down by this as he said he probably would need to refract me ( get a prescription for specs). My left eye feels like there's a fingerprint in my field of vision. So, now I walk around not being able to see details clearly on people's faces etc.

I'm just hoping it all settles as soon as possible as this has robbed me of nearly 3 months of disruptions to my life. Looks like I need to wait for a few weeks till I can get my glasses to be able to see to drive.

Sorry to go on, but, I'm very disheartened.

    Happy New Year rolleyes

Goodness ozziegal, you've had an awful time.

I had my eye done in 1992, the cataract had developed because of long term use of steroid eye drops.  After the op, the nurses told me I had been lucky with my surgeon, he had taken 40 minutes, most were done in 20.  I have just been speaking to that well known surgeon Mr Google and have learned that these days, an op takes 10 minutes.

      I'm speechless!!

Hallo Mrs Mop.  I haven't been on this site before.  I didn't realize people had an operation for cataracts!!  I have had cataracts removed, twice on both eyes!  Here you go to the opthalmist and in 3 minutes he zaps them away!!!

I thought you only had an operation when you had split, or detached, retina.

I had this operation on both eyes pre cataracts.

      You live and learn!

      Greetings from Constance

Mine, of course, were lazered away.  Done on the national health over here. Glad I didn't have anything done in England!!   Everything has been absolutely splendid since then.

      Where is 'over here' Constance?

I don't actually live in England, I do, however, live in the United Kingdom.

I have no complaints about my cataract operation.  It is unfortunate that I have a chronic eye condition that requires regular treatment

I just read your post and could have jumped up and down because you are describing exactly what I have been trying to describe to numerous ophthalmologists for months now! The shimmering ring description is spot on! Can I ask if this has ever resolved and what brand of lens was implanted? Hope to hear from you🙏
