Eyesight worse after cataract surgery...now 20/200

Hi. I had cataract surgery on my right dominant eye on August 30th with a canaloplasty for glaucoma. The canaloplasty surgery seems to be working but, after many weeks, my vision in that eye is 20/200.

Because my vision was so blurry after surgery I am on my second round of steroid eye drops as well.

The only answer my doctor has given me is that the lens "settled" (whatever that means). The only option he has suggested is to get fitted for bifocals, which I have never worn. He didn't think Lasik or laser surgery was a good idea. I guess the only good news is that the 20/200 vision can be somewhat corrected with eyeglasses but I am beyond depressed and anxious as I never expected my vision to become worse after cataract surgery. I had a monofocal lens implanted and was told that my distance vision could be corrected to 20/30 and that I would need glasses to read.

I've been researching the possibility of finding a surgeon who will do an intraocular lens exchange but seem to be having difficulty finding someone who does this type of surgery. I live in northern California and am willing to travel a bit to get this done.

I would really appreciate any information you may be able to share about intraocular lens exchanges.

Thank you!

You're entitled to a better explanation, and will need one in order to decide whether a lens exchange would even be helpful. If your current doctor will not communicate better, I think it is time for a second opinion.

Sorry to hear about the undesirable outcome.

but I am beyond depressed and anxious

I hear you. Been there, done that.

I can't offer much optical advice on what to do next (I am a newbie here to learn as well after my less than desirable results) but I also live in Northern California and if you DM me I can share with you the name of the ophthalmologist that many recommended to me for my second eye surgery. Apparently, one of the best in the US.

Carol, I'm sorry your results aren't good...so frustrating. David Chang in Los Altos is one of the top ophthalmologists in the world; look him up and then you might get an appointment with him to explore options. The various surgeons at Vance Thompson in Sioux Falls, SD do a lot of lens explantation/exchanges, as does Douglas Donald Koch in Texas, but you have David Chang in the Bay Area.

Thank you for these suggestions. I will definitely look into all of them.

not only is it frustrating also very disappointing that your surgeon gave you know explanation. All lens settled do what does he mean by that. I see you have some suggestions for a second opinion. It would be advisable to get one and a third if needed to get an explanation as to why your vision isnt ideal. best of luck to you
