Faecal incontinence following botox
Posted , 6 users are following.
It's day 10 after botox injections for an anal fissure
I've had 5 episodes of faecal incontinence since the procedure and coupled with the fissure pain which hasn't eased as yet am feeling increasingly miserable
Any one else experience incontinence after botox?
How long did it last?
Was it every day ?
How did you cope and manage to go about your usual daily living ?
I am barely leaving the house 😕

Jennifer I am 16 mo post Botox and I am ok other than this dumb hemmeroid I’m dealing with. I haven’t experienced inconsistency but I did have problems hold my gas. My first few bms post op were rough they hurt bad! I started to feel less & less pain as time went on. By mo two I was good. I’m sore your going through all that! I know how it feels not being able to go anywhere cuz u hurt so bad. I still get that with the hemmeroids!! But not the spams!! Best of luck!!

Hello Meeesha
Really sorry to hear you are having to deal with this
I am 2 weeks post botox and yesterday was the first day that I have had any relief from the pain which has been almost as bad as it was before the injections
I am now at least a bit more hopeful that the fissure is healing because I have been feeling very despondent
Feel like I'm coping badly with the incontinence . The surgeon was very dismissive and said to go to the toilet as soon as the urge is there but didn't seem to appreciate that I cannot run that quickly even when I'm at home and close to the toilet !!!
All he said was things would return to normal when the botox wears off
As a result I am hardly leaving the house and have stopped seeong friends
I go for walks in the dark with a torch to avoid seeing neighbours
I am retired so don't have to worry about work
I am so sorry you are having to deal with this in a work situation and wish I could offer some advice or reassurance
Have you had any advice re appropriate incontinence aids ?
Really hope your employers are sympathetic
Hope things improve for you soon

Hi Jennifer
I have had botox injections for anal fissure around 6 weeks ago. The consultant did not properly inform me of the problems I could have. He did tell me that the muscle would relax to give the fissure time to heal. He made it sound like having a flu jab! He didn't explain that it was the sphincter muscle and that I could experience incontinence. I'd already had a colonoscopy and had 2 polyps removed. He told me that he would remove a small growth (which he explained was like a small wart) and would inject botox for the fissure. The fissure hadn't caused any pain but I thought he knows best! Well I'm like you, I've had a number of close calls. I only managed because I was close to a toilet. Apparently I have to wait for 3-6 months - and I hate it. Hope you are faring better now.

Hi Sue
Beginning to think some surgeons really not very good at explaining options and consequences to people
I'm afraid on occasion I simply cannot run quickly enough even when I'm at home and I am now very anxious about going out
I had ( and continue to have ) a lot of pain with the fissure so understand why botox was suggested to me ....just very disappointed theres been little improvement in 4 weeks and incontinenent now as well
Hope things improve for you soon
As a matter of interest which country are you in ??

Hi Jennifer, I'm in England and I've got to admit no one you speak to can ever understand exactly what you are going through unless they are experiencing this pain, discomfort and embarrassment. I can only wish you well and tell you I know what it feels like and I'm retirement age like you but still working, although not at the moment obviously!😔

Hi Sue
It's all very embarrassing having a fissure ...and then the incontinence on top ....I didn't think I would be buying pull up pants like nappies at 55 yrs old !
I am normally very fit and active and this has come from nowhere
You mentioned you were told you would have to wait 3-6 months....what was that for?
Myn surgeon said the botox would wear off in 2/3 months and continue would return ....unless he does more botox of course ?

Hi Jennifer,
The consultant said that the botox would start to wear off at 3 months and would be completely disappeared by 6 months, a hell of a time to wait like this 😯 I'm not sure I can put up with this! What country are you from? Good luck🤞

Hi Jennifer
I'm from Essex/ Greater London and I had my procedure done at a local private hospital that does operations for the nhs. The problem is if you have any trouble you have to be referred back to the nhs hospital! It feels like these private hospitals can cherry pick what work they do for the nhs.

Hello Jennifer
I am not sure if you are still on here as it was 3 years ago. just wondering how you got on with your experience with Botox for fissure and incontinence. how long did it take to get better and did you get back to normal. I do hope so. This is exactly where I am now. I am 13 days and I am having the most dreadful time of it. virtually no warning. I am spending most of my time in the bathroom. just looking to see how long I am going to be like this.
I am from Devon as well.

hi Sandy
I'm not active in this forum any more but your message came straight into my email box
According to the CRS I had an adverse reaction to the botox and to be honest was in a pretty bad way with no bowel control and very frequent bowel movements. I felt very ill for about 5 months and think I was systemically poisoned by the botox .
the actual fissure took about 6 months to heal after the botox
I don't want to alarm you as it may not be the same for you but I didn't regain continence when the botox wore off and spent the next 18 months wearing incontinence pull up pants and not risking even a drink away from the house
I ended up having biofeedback with a specialist physiotherapist and slowly regained a better degree of continence and enough confidence to resume wearing normal underwear
It's a really difficult situation to be in ....humiliating and embarrassing ....I pooed myself in public several times and ended up hardly going out for several months
where in Devon are you ?

Hello Jennifer.
Thank you so much for your reply.
I have been having problems for 3 years with the bowels. but kept getting fissures. then i had an early apt for non related and was trying to get out of the house, and had the most terrible time in the bathroom and this was last June. and ended up with 2 fissures. and had the Botox on the 28th April and its been non stop. I have had to purchase pads for at night. (huge ones) and incontinence pull ups. I barely make it to the bathroom. as I am writing this I have spent a lot of the last 3 days stuck in the bathroom and I didn't think it could get worse than the initial coming out of the Hospital. I have an apt this morning non related and dreading it. scared to leave the house. I would love to get back to my old normal. but I am beginning to wonder if I ever am.
I am from Newton Abbot.

I am so sorry to hear how difficult things are for you as I can identify so much
I was indoors for months and then when the fissure healed I developed a perianal abscess which became a fistula cutting through both sphincter muscles . I have had a seton for over 2 years ....I live in Modbury and they cant do anything more for me at Derriford
I've been to London and at some point will have surgery at St Mark's but not at the moment with covid
all i can say is things did get better for me but not until i had the biofeedback
I still have the weirdest of mornings with 3 bms and three showers before I dare leave the house so it still takes hours but I'm leading a much more ' normal " life ( covid aside ! ) than I was originally
Try not to give up hope ....I know it's really hard
have you got a follow up with the surgeon who I did the botox ?
I actually had some counselling when things were at their worse as I found it so hard being incontinent when I had previously been really fit / healthy and active
I wish there was something I could do to help
I hope you're not having to go out to work whilst you're dealing with this
