Failed Labral Tear Surgery

Posted , 30 users are following.

hello! I am new to this board. I injured my left hip last December. Took some time to diagnosis but an X-ray and MRI found a Labral tear, bone spurs and cam pincer impingement. Also to my surprise severe arthritis. Had arthoscopy surgery in June and haven't been able to recover. Still on crutches and am told I now need THR. I am very discouraged to say the least. I have been in constant pain since December and even more so since my surgery. I don't see my new surgeon until next week and probably am looking at the end of Oct for my hip replacement. End of my rope!  I am 59 and USED to be active. I can't do a thing and am gaining weight from inactivity. Any advice on how to cope?

    Hi all,

I'm 24 years old and have had two hip scopes (one on each hip). First one was December 2015 and the second February 2016. Both however seem to have been unsuccessful and I still can't walk, run or sleep without pain. I'm going to get in contact with my surgeon again as I feel like I shouldn't have so much trouble with my hips at my age. It's nice to know that I'm not alone with this as all of you have had similar experiences. I don't believe I have any arthritis in the hip and I was wondering if anyone knows the process of treatment after failed hip scopes?

My daughter is only 26 years old and same issues as you. Failed left hip arthroscopy - its been a year and half and she cannot sit, stand or walk more then 10 minutes . Lost her job - has chronic severe pain . Keep in touch and let us know what transpires . Weve heard from one surgeon that sometimes they just dont know what is wrong and hip replacement is last shot at a life . Rothman clinic supposed to be good .

I'm a 42 year old male been having hip problems for 8-10 years.  I played lots of basketball in high school and played golf 2 or 3 x a week never remember injuring my hip.  Went for my first MRI of hip probably in 08 or 09.  Said looked normal nothing wrong no arthritis.  I went on another year or 2 was still bad went for another MRI a year or 2 later.  Still nothing was disappointing but went on another 2 or so years did a lot of reading came up I had a Labral tear and read MRI basically useless to diagnose them unless they use the dye or contrast so with my instructions they did.  So after 3 or 4 MRI along with couple injections in the joint over this 5-7 year period  I had a labral tear had it repaired in Nashville tn dr byrd supposed to be one of the best.  After surgery discussed with him he said I had a lot going on but he cleaned out my bone spurs and I had fai impingement along with my labrum had calcified.  Said he did his best but didn't sound promising I may have had some relief maybe a month or 2 but then bam back same as before 6 months later this was appx 3 years ago.  I went appx 1 year ago trying to tell doctors what I needed in Lexington Ky this doesn't go over too well bruise a lot of egos along the way.  I met with my first doctors he mentioned arthroscopic I bluntly said I tried that I need a new hip he said it's minimal arthritis blah blah so went to a different doctor there in the group 1 time appx 1 year ago he suggested open it up try to fix what need fixing but no thr I wasn't excited about that .  So wait another year until appx 2 weeks ago meet with same dr in lex thinking be same thing put it off more pain etc.  after looking at my X-rays he said is your quality of life bad I said it's terrible for a 42 year old used to be active this was on a Thursday he says I have an opening for next wed to do thr do you want to do it.  I was shocked not ready but knew he takes months to get into always heard good things.  So here I am 1.5 weeks post op of my left hip thr so far so good still sore but hopefully the surgery will be a success sorry so long

Hello rance838.  I'm 44 and had my hip scoped about 2.5 years ago and now I am in much worse pain, barely able to walk.  I am in Lexington also.  Do you mind to tell me who did your THR and how you feel about it so far?

hi i’m 19 female who has been struggling coping with tear in left hip for over a year and was very active in high school that i injured it, i’ve been in active, in physical therapy, had 2 separate injections of the cortisone shot and prescribed many different medications that do not help the pain. i then received surgery to shave my hip bone down (arthroscopic hip surgery) this last september 2017, and recovered horribly with physical therapy again. it is not May 2018 and now both hips are in constant pain, and my original injury causes more pain than prior to the surgery. so far all i have taken to help the pain, is percocet and i do not enjoy relying on such a strong drug just to sleep comfortably at night. i am now waiting to see if there are any other surgeons willing to help me and do the surgery to (what i’m told) both hips in order to fix them. i have struggled staying in class in college simply because i cannot sit for long, i have a job and receive very little hours because i cannot stand for long. please let me know if you have any advice. thank you!

The pain management doctor prescribed me percocet and meloxicam for my pain.  This was about 2.5 years after my hip scope.  Meloxicam surprised me with how much it helped with the pain.  Crazy enough, aspirin also helped quite a bit, but you can't take those two together as they are both blood thinners.  I was on the meds for less than 6 months and finally got my hip replaced, the arthritis was severe enough that if I didn't have the surgery done fairly soon, the socket would have been in bad enough shape that the surgery would no longer be a simple replacement.  Anyway, that was January 3.  The replacement (with anterior approach) was a success and now I have a tiny bit of discomfort and that's it.  I got a ceramic replacement and they are projecting these to last close to 30 years, the new materials have not been out long enough to get the final data yet.  I am now back to 95% normal, so I am very happy with the surgery.

wow i am so happy you have reached 95% of where you originally were, sounds like a long recovery. a friend of mine who is 19 had hip replacement because she tore through so much of her cartilage in her hips and she is at 100% now. though it did take years of recovery for her. i hope i can see a third opinion on what to do with my hips and recover, no other medications have been effective for me on pain other than the percocet which was prescribed to me after my surgery.
