Failed shoulder surgeries X 2

Posted , 5 users are following.

I am a 48 year female . I Was living a normal life once . I had a shoulder decompression surgery for an Impingement and inflamed Bursa in May 2016 which only lasted for 8 months until again I started feeling unwell . Had a 2nd shoulder decrompression and Bursectomy in April 2017 which only lasted 8 weeks . And now my shoulder seems to reverted back to its original state.

I am now out of work and totally housebound , unable to drive , prepare a meal , dress myself or shower. The Pain is indescribable which never allows me to sleep . It is all consuming 24/7 .

My Gp has put me on 12 hour release morphine . I am terrified I'm going to be left like this for the rest of my life and struggling with depression now and wanting to carry on with life some days .

Has anyone else experienced failed shoulder surgeries please . Would be grateful to hear from anyone . Really feeling my life is over and I feel I'm too young .

Did you use the same surgeon both times? If so, maybe you need to look for someone who can look at things in a different light. You're right, living on mophine is no way to live. You are still young. Have you had physical therapy? You may need someone to look at your biomechanics of how you are doing things functionally. you may have some weaknesses that are changing how the shoulder head interacts with the glenoid fossa promoting impingement. I hope you can find some help.

Hi. So very sorry for your pain. Just wondering, your GP put you on morphine? Did you see an ortho doc? Who did your surgeries? What have you done as far as physical therapy? Just wondering as it seems there is info missing here. You are too young for this and shoulders are so painful when they aren't working properly. Debilitating too. Keep in touch. Hang in there. thankyou so much for your reply . Yes I have seen in total now 4 Orthopedics surgeons and my surgeries performed by two different surgeons. I've had steroid injections , pysiotheraphy , tried acupuncture also . It's unknown why my surgeries have both failed and my quality of life is zero.

My shoulder impingement keeps happening but I would suspect now due to muscle weakness . My only option now seems a Pain Clinic in London .

Are there no occupational therapists in London? If yes please contact for evaluation. Good luck and post updated when you are about!

Danielle, when in April 2017 did you have your second surgery?  You are still in the window of 2-4 months (up to a full year) to start feeling better.  Did you have any success with rom?  Is the ball migrating during rom or is it sitting in the center of the socket?  Your PT should be able to tell you this from manual movement treatment - when the PT moves the shoulder through its rom.  If the ball is migrating how is it migrating?  If the ball is moving or sliding around abnormally in the socket, you will have less clearance beneath the impingement resulting in greater pain, diminished motion, etc. , etc.  The more I am thinking about your initial post; the more questions start popping into my mind. Where you able to start any strengthening or no the second time around?  Are you icing to help with the pain?   If you must ring a counselor for some direction in coping and re-grouping.  You must not give up.  Do you have a spouse, family, friends for support at home?  Take a break, have a good cry then gather your wits and keep working through the issues.

I too have joined the club of failed surgery. In November I had RC surgery which failed. second specialist wants to do reverse. I have no pain just little rom. The idea of second surgery gives me anxiety attacks(trembling hands etc.) I can function but stiffly. I can't drive, hard to cook so I know how you feel,

Marsha, I am glad that you are moving forward without the second surgery.  I have several friends who have had rc repair that has left them with limited rom. They have adjusted and have been living quite successfully a few years now.

My surgery from 1/27/17 was successful reattaching two ripped off muscle tendons, and the subscap continues to heal independently.  I DID NOT expect my PT to pull the crap he pulled 13 weeks into my rehab 5/11/17 i.e. ripping off the supraspinatus reattachment due to his carelessness.  I was never supposed to be doing the "new" exercise. IT was TOO EARLY months wise in the recovery. The PT never consulted with the surgeon.  DUMB.  ARGH!  I had full rom..ugh...frustrating.

Anyhow...I had the re-repair "revision" surgery to reattach the supra 6/2.  Same surgeon, same surgical team.  We kept it light calling it the "reunion" four months later.

The surgery lasted five hours instead of three hours.  The surgeon put in a "double row of anchors" this time around.  He drilled four holes through the ball to make the new anchor points etc.  The re-repair was done arthroscopically via the same five holes.  6/20 the external stitches come out, I visit with the surgeon and later in the morning start physical therapy again with a different PT affiliated with a different medical outfit.  The new PT has worked with some friends and neighbors various rehabbing.  She is touted as a very reliable PT.  So 6/20 is the PT eval.  I keep thinking it will be okay.  The surgery is the worse.  That's done.  The new holes, anchor, etc. are giving me a bit of trouble sleeping 800 mg of Ibuprofen every 6 hours helps.  The shoulder feels different probably because the other re-attachment to infraspinatus is holding and healing as is subscap i.e. less damage and trauma this time around.  Thankfully, I do not work over the summer.  I return 8/7 to work.

I also have to be evaluated by an occupational therapist OT next week.  Do you have OTs in your area?  Have you been to one?  I think you might want to look into OT especially if you are done with PT.

Occupational therapists: Apply their specific knowledge to enable people to engage in activities of daily living that have personal meaning and value. Develop, improve, sustain, or restore independence to any person who has an injury, illness, disability or psychological dysfunction.

      Just a thought.

Need referral for OT in Florida plus I am too old to work (64). What gives me anxiety is my limited rom . I can't drive (reach gear, shift,, my loss of independence.)

In Florida PTs don't consult with doctors,

Thanks. I feel just as you do (depressed, anxious). My trembling started after meeting the second surgeon. I have to accept my present condition, especially since there's no pain. Today the 18 th is the anniversary of my accident. I dislike my present ,-l

Loss of independence, limited rom . I get anxious about the littlest things now.. My life changed a year ago . I am somewhat functional just not like before

Have you made calls to OT office?  I found this on FL Board of OT's website.

Does an occupational therapist need a signed prescription from a physician authorizing OT services in the state of Florida?

In many jurisdictions, the practice of occupational therapy is contingent upon the prescription or referral of a physician. However, the Florida Occupational Therapy Practice Laws and Rules are silent on this issue, not stating that a Doctor’s prescription is required to provide professional OT services. However, there are different Facility requirements and billing requirements that may mandate a Doctor’s prescription, (such as the Agency for Health Care Administration’s Facility Regulations). As a Florida licensed OT professional, one is allowed to provide occupational therapy services in the state.

Adjusting to the limitations takes time.  Take it slow.  Are you able to do anything with the vehicle situation?  Trade it in?  Swap with a relative or friend?  Church help under the circumstance?

Good PTs and doctors do communicate with each other.  I think it is terrible what happens when this excuse is used i.e. crappy care, limited recovery.  They have to work in unison.  I learned a lot during and after my experience;  I have discussed with the state-I will be filing a formal complaint due to the PT's negligence.  The PT assistant and the PT organization are also being named in separate state complaints.  Additionally, my attorney is involved, and there will be legal consequences after we see how the new rehab goes probably 12 months or so from now.

I hope things go well for you.  Keep your chin up.

Marsha, if you need a referral call the doctor's off and ask that a referral is provided.  You have the right to this support even in FL.  An OT eval and a few visits might lift your spirits and give you some good adjustment pointers.  Keep your chin up.

My daughter uses the car when hers is not available. I can use the arm but with limited movement. I am stiff when I bend over i.e. Dishwasher loading, can't stretch arm out i.e. Dishwashing, cleaning. Have to squat to make arm touch the floor if something drops. I have to get used to using my left arm for chores. I am blatantly right handed!
