Failed stitch removal at 2 weeks.....

Posted , 10 users are following.

I went to my GP's surgery today to have my stitches removed. It was a complete and utter failure.  The nurse couldn't pull the stitches out and neither could her colleague.

Has anyone else had this problem?

    Hi Chloe.

Im three weeks post op and mine were dissolvable stitches. I thought all stitches were dissolvable these days.

It might be worth contacting your consultant directly. My wound is still slightly open so maybe yours just aren't ready to come out yet? X

I was instructed by the hospital to make an appointment with my surgery at 2 weeks to have the stitches removed, they definitely aren't the dissolvable type.

I have spoken to the hospital and apparently it is not an uncommon problem - which surprised me.  I am going back to the hospital next week to see if they can remove the stitches.

You poor thing, sounds horrid, and you must be fed up. Mine were disposable, just had to go to have the plastic covering removed at 2 weeks.

    Good luck, Judith

Hmm, that's not very good is it Chloe? Surely they should have arranged for someone that could take them out properly? I love taking stitches out! They must be very tight!  If they stay in too long it could be more uncomfortable taking them out as you start to heal over them. I was very lucky, I had what looked like an awful lot of staples that came out on day 12. A few of them were uncomfortable, but the wound felt much better without them!

I was rather surprised that 2 nurses couldn't remove the stitches.

I'm going back to the hospital on Monday to see if they can remove the stitches.

      Wish me luck.

I think if they can't on Monday it may be time to be a bit more assertive and say you will wait until someone more qualified is free and able to take them out. I know we Brits are very good at being polite and non - complaining, but if the shoe were on the other foot ( so to speak), and it was one of the nurse's relatives in this predicament, I know for certain they would not keep quiet!

I hope it is not the same nurse as the first time. New to me as I never heard this. I had many staples and they came out with a slight “ouch”. Good luck

I had dissovable stitches, however the top one seemed to have a knot under the skin, seemed not to go?

Went to hospital @ 4 wks and they cut it flush with my body but said it would have dissolved in it's own time.

6 weeks and I cannot feel it anymore.

    Hope that's some help x

Mine was the same jackie, all the stitches dissolved except the know at the top. It was starting to bother me so my sister, who is a nurse, used a sterile staple to futbit away. Feels better now and the scar is pretty small and neat.
