Take heed if Oldfatguy, he gives good measured advice. Nothing I could add, apart from if it worsens considerably over the weekend, i.e. If you find the knee swelling more and cannot put any weight on it go to A&E. Hopefully if you follow OFG's advice the swelling will reduce negating the need for emergency mecical assistance.
I wish you well Mary.

Deep bruising, elevate, rest , ice anti inflammatories. It will take time for the bruising to go away as there is lots of protective soft tissue and an already tender knee. Give it a couple days. If it appears to be getting more swollen or otherwise worsening by Monday, get in to see your orthopods. He may want to take some fluid out for lab tests. Don't add to the grief. By doing any impact activities. Ice 20 mins on 20 mins off. You can also massage with Vit E as it heals all the way to the bone.

When was your op Matthew?
The extension exercises can be a real killer!
Is it the one where you sit on a chair with the heel of the operated leg on another chair? The hospital leaflet says to do these for 5-10 mins, but initially, the ward physio told me to build them up slowly maybe do 2 mins to start then build up to 10.
Alternatively try lying face down on your bed with the thighs on the bed & lower legs over the side & relax & let gravity do its 'thang', also for about 5-10 mins.
Extension exercises are crucial as without a straight leg you will always limp.
