Fall at 6 weeks

Posted , 6 users are following.

I am nearly 7 weeks post op. Was doing well as walking unaided and mostly doing usual stuff around house. Walking without pain and no limp.

Anyway the other day I lost my balance in garden and I was falling over onto non operated side so I allowed myself to fall rather than use operated leg to try and rebalanced. Thought that was best option in that split second. Of course I then had to work out how to get up !!!! Managed it sticking to 90 degree rule.

But since then I am getting spasms in groin, thigh and buttock again which had stopped. There is no real pain just a tingling sensation. I am still able to walk unaided and still not limping.

Question is I think I may have jolted muscles tendons etc and that's the sensation. If I had done any damage surely there would be pain? I am not keen on going to check it as seems petty considering only 6 weeks and likely to say symptoms usual at this stage. Any views?

    Hi Sandra,

Oh dear ... you might have discarded your walking aids too early ...

The hip joint implant is rotating (getting up and down, turn,  etc) in cup as well as taking pressure, like when you walk your weight will press it down

The purpose of the  crutches or walker or sticks  is to avoid a fall or sudden twist. Weight-bearing is safe immediately after surgery. But until the implants have grown into the bone, a process that takes at least 4 to 6 weeks, a fall or other sudden twisting force on the leg can risk implant loosening or injury to the leg.

Because the hip replacement components are designed to heal directly to bone without use of bone cement, the  stability of the implants in your body is assured by 4 to 6 weeks, at the minimum.

Then, when you feel confident and balanced, you can walk without a aids, but if there is any question, stay with a cane until you feel safe ---

Did you have you follow appointment yet?

I am joining the choir here to go and have it checked just to make sure that all is well -

Sounds you are doing great ...

    big warm hug

    Hi all

Thank you very much for your responses and I took heed. Just got back from seeing my surgeon and all is ok. Good to see my hip on x ray which is exactly the same as it was on discharge. He said as I thought probably muscle strain from fall.

I walked into his office very awkwardly using crutches as my walking is good so difficult to use. He said....'and you can dump those crutches you don't need them anymore' He also said I could slowly start to give up movement restrictions now.

WOW. I am kind of glad it happened as my follow up appt isn't til end of October and I am going abroad on holiday the two weeks before that. I can rest easy......take it easy!!!!!........ and enjoy my holiday.

Thank you again for your care and support x
