Fast pulsing sound in left ear when blocked / laying down on left side (35M)

I've been having a strange new symptom for the last week or so. I always sleep with earplugs and I've started hearing a faint but definitely irritating pulsing sound in my left ear, only when wearing an earplug or when laying on my left side with my ear on the pillow. It's much faster than my pulse (approx 3 times as fast) and doesn't seem to be related or synchronised with the pulse in any way as far as I can tell.

Some initial googling threw up something called pulsatile tinnitus but I've seen people suggesting that this is a noise that can actually sometimes be blocked out by wearing earplugs so it sort of sounds like the opposite of what I have. Does this sound like anything anyone recognises?
