Father had hemerrhoidectomy 2.5 weeks ago, and is still in pain. Is anyone else experiencing this?

I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same thing following a hemmerhoidectomy?

He was hoping to basically be fully recovered by now and is becoming frustrated with the process.

In the meantime, he just wants to relax, sleep and sit still until he gets better.

Also, he seems to be constipated, despite NOT taking pain medication at all following the surgery. He's also eating a fiber rich diet, and taking two stool softeners a day.

Is anyone taking more than 2 stool softeners a day to assist with BM's?

    Hi,

Sorry to hear your father is in pain. I am not sure which hemmorhoidectomy he had, but I had the stapled hemmorhoidectomy 7 months ago, I also had another rectal surgery for fissure the following month. I still have pain. They told me two weeks but it was more like 4 months before my severe pain subsided. I still have moderate pain. My surgeon told me to take metamucil but I tend to get constipated with that, so I take half a dose. A whole lot of water, and miralax. I take half a cap of miralax daily still. Your dad would probably need to play around with the amount. It gives some people too runny of stool. Also a lot of soaks in the tub ease pain. There are some numbing lidocaine medications that help some people. Tell your Dad to hang in there.

Thank you for taking the time to respond, angela68883. I think we're slowly finding a routine that works for him. It's just up to him to stick with it. He's not accustomed to having to eat this much fiber, take stool softeners and drink this much water, so my mom and I have found that we're having to constantly remind him that if he doesn't do these things, he'll remain constipated, which will slow down recovery, and thus the pain will continue. Today has been one of his better days thus far, and he admits it's because he's finally listening to us and doing what he needs to do.

I hope you're well on your way to recovery as well and that you're feeling much better soon! 😃

i would say its fairly normal to still have some pain at 2.5 weeks post op..especially after BMs. i only took pain medication for 1 week but there was pain after BMs (although managable) well into week 4. it gets less intense and lasts for shorter period of time as time goes on. i managed to stay fairly regular with mostly 1 bm in the mornings so by noon my pain had typically subsided. i was on a plain diet, eating porridge in the morning, cooked vegetables and soups at lunch/ dinner. it was very boring but it kept me regular so i kept at it. the tricky part is that both constipation as well as multiple bms really impact on the pain and recovery. i also took 1 movicol in the mornings and magnesium powder in the evening. it relaxes the colon and also helps to draw water into it which aids bms. drinking water is the key though as too much fiber without water will cause everything to slow down and cause constipation. wishing your dad a smooth recovery.. hope he feels better and better each day.

Thank you for taking time out of your day to respond, h45851. I feel like my dad could have written your response! He despises having to eat such a high fibre diet, drink so much water and take stool softeners, but realizes that if he doesn't keep it up, he'll continue to feel sick and it will most likely slow down his recovery even more. Today has been one of his better days because he's been doing what he's supposed to do - diet wise, water wise and stool softener wise. So at this point, here's hoping he sticks with it now that he sees that it works!

Hope you feel better soon as well and wishing you a speedy recovery! 😃
