Hey! I’m Stephenie. I’m 25.

Two years ago, during an examination for my IBS, my doctor saw that I had something called fatty liver and told me it was no big deal and to just drink in moderation and don’t eat fried food.

I stopped drinking for like two months- I went on a fast, and when I went for another checkup the doctor said my blood results looked incredible and that I improved and he wanted to do a sonogram just to make sure but I didn’t do it. I was fine with the blood results and I continued my normal party-ish lifestyle : I drank with my friends maybe 3 days a week, we would go to a bar and I’d have 5-6 whiskey cokes and we would eat french fries and chocolate for dinner. I’ll admit my social drinking lasted for a very long time, I’ve been going out regularly since I was 16. I’m not surprised I had fatty liver.

Fast forward a year, and I got into a relationship with someone who doesn’t drink. Naturally, I also stopped drinking because I spend most of my time with my partner. I considered this a good thing. I felt better.

We only drank together maybe four times, all on the week of my birthday when we went on vacation and it was only like one or two drinks at a time. Once in a blue I’d have a glass of wine with my mom when we went out for a nice dinner, but overall now when doctors would ask me if I drink I can honestly say NO. I don’t. Not even socially. I can hardly finish one drink without feeling nauseated or, even drunk.

I was proud of myself.

A few months ago my ANA Panel tested positive as well as my liver enzymes so my doctor ordered a liver biopsy. It turns out I have Fatty Liver, and it’s damaged 50% of my liver and there is no reversing it, according to my doctor. He said it must be from all the years of abuse in the past since I’m not overweight and I haven’t drank much for the past year or so. He put me on medication called Metformin, he says it should help stop my liver from progressing into cirrhosis. Google tells me that Metformin is bad for the liver so I’m really confused and worried as to why I’m taking this.

So I have a few questions for you guys, and hopefully you can help.

1) Is there ANY way to reverse the damage when it’s gone this far? 50%? That’s half my liver. I’m scared of it getting worse. Can it get better?,_!%#*!<!8,,-! do?

( I have since picked up a clean diet. I’m not overweight, but I’m not thin or healthy either. I can definitely stand to lose a few pounds and tone up and be more active and put the fries down. I have since lost 8 pounds  And I’m continuing on my journey to HEALTH. I’m hoping this will reverse it even by a little. )

2) Does anyone know if Metformin is good for me or is it going to hurt me??? Anyone else get prescribed this?

3) My doctor said I can live a normal life and even drink in moderation. I’m always confused by him because he makes fatty liver sound like no big deal. Christmas is in two weeks and i did want to have a glass of Coquito, and then in February is my partners birthday so I wanted to have a drink or two with her then too. Am I allowed to? Will a few drinks a year (holidays, birthdays) DAMAGE my liver further? Or would it be okay if I live a clean lifestyle and have a glass of here and there? I’m confused as to how it works. I do not want to damage my liver further, but I do want to enjoy my life. I understand I’ll probably never be able to go out and get wasted again- i’m 100% fine with that, I can honestly say I don’t care. I never even liked alcohol, I just did it because I was young and stupid and my friends drank.

But I wouldn’t mind a glass of wine or a shot or two on my birthday, y’know? A fancy drink after work with a new coworker, a date etc.

But am I never EVER allowed to do this again? This is what I don’t know, especially when my doctor brushes my condition off like it’s nothing.

Stephanie I am sorry to hear your news. I am confused that you have been prescribed metformin because I take that but I take it for diabetes Type 2 and having never heard of it for fatty liver disease.  Can I suggest that you get in touch with thge British Liver Trust. I have liver disease (not fatty liver, something called Carolis disease) and have just had to have half of it removed and found BLT very helpful giving helpful and unbiased advice.  Even though I have had half of my liver removed I am still allowed by my consultant to drink alcohol but not more than 2 units per day. Have you asked your doctor to refer you to a specialist to get a definitive answer to your questions. I have seen 2 specialists and they were great. My own doctor was quite honest in saying he knew next to nothing about liver diseases.

I speak from experience. I had fatty liver decease and it has progressed to cirrhosis. I have major problems. My advise take it or leave it. Fatty liver is not necessarily dangerous but if it leads to cirrhosis your in real trouble. You MUST stop drinking alcohol. Period. Don't risk your life over a bit of wine. Please, take this very seriously. 1. Stop drinking altogether. 2. Lean out - get into the best shape of your life. 3. Zero fried foods. 4. Stay away from processed foods. 5. Eat tons of veggies and fresh fruit. 75% veggies and 25% fruit. You can do this and live a long life. Or not.

    Best regards,
