FBC & Serum Ferritin

Hi,

I've been having ongoing issues with GI blood loss for a while now which have thankfully been resolved approximately 3 months ago.

On my last FBC I was anemic with normocytic RBC, low RBC count and normal MCH. I also had a serum ferritin of 9.

At that moment in time I was experiencing regular heavy blood loss which was stopped via a procedure.

At that moment I also decided to stop being a vegetarian after 5 years to try and increase my heme iron intake.

Fast forward 3 months and my new results are (new vs old):

serum ferritin7. vs 9

RBC 6.08. vs 4.25

haemoglobin estimate. 138 vs 109

hematocrit.0.435. vs 0.350

RBDW. 19% vs. 13.3 %

MCV. 71.5. vs 82.4

MCH. 22.7. vs. 25.6

MCHC. 317 vs 311

So my RBC has gone up (good) as has my haemoglobin (good). but i am now microcytic and hypochromic.

Can anyone explain what's potentially going on.

i assumed if i stopped bleeding and ate more iron rich foods like red meat, that my ferritin would have increased rather than decreasing.
