Hi this is my first post on here so I am a 15 year old boy from Glasgow Scotland. I used to sleep as soon as a hit the pillow but after coming across fatal insomnia that all changed the past couple of weeks I have been having trouble sleeping but it was getting better a would lie and in half a hour a would be asleep but the last week have been like hell not being able to sleep till 2:30 am and last night a wasn’t able to fall asleep at all so scared. Can you get it this young. What if a can’t get to sleep tonight does this mean I have it. Brain

You do not have fatal insomnia.  As many others here have said, it is extraordinarily rare and typically only manifests itself much later in life than 15 years old.  You have some insomnia, and it is being made much worse by fearing that you are going to die from it.  You can now rest assured, that won't be happening.

Has this been triggered by anxiety or stress?

Thanks so much for the reply last night I never slept again at all I am still super nervous about it. It only got bad 3 weeks ago when watching a video about the most rarest’s diseases and it is was on it and I scared the crap out of me and 2 nights after that I had a panic attack about me not sleeping. Thanks so much for the reply👍🏼

      Hi Brian,

The operative word in your second sentence is "rarest". It really does have an incidence of about one in half a million. You'd have more chance of being hit by a low-flying aeroplane or winning a major jackpot on the lottery. And as Neckbone says, it would be rarer still for someone your age to get it.

It's quite normal to panic about all kinds of things at your age. When I was 15 I used to get scared a UFO would land on the roof and take me away! Seriously. Sometimes I'd lie awake half the night, jumping at every noise. I bet if your friends were honest you'd hear all sorts of peculiar stories from them.

Just give yourself time to settle down into a normal sleep pattern again, and everything will be fine. This is all part of the painful business of becoming an adult but it doesn't go on for ever.

Thanks so much lily for replying again i tell myself that it’s super rare and that it’s basically impossible to get it at my age but I just can’t seem to manage to calm my self down and I am afraid of dying from this at such a young age 😭

Have u been tested for lyme disease and all the co infections? Its hard to find, and can mimic any disease. I have been tested 3 times to find it, I finally found it at a lyme specialist. Even a spinal tap missed it. I've had insomnia very bad myself along with tons of other symtoms

No Brian, you don't have it. I'm a former neuro nu rse and I know what I'm talking about!

Insomnia is actually one of the final symptoms of the disease you're describing. It only comes when all your other faculties have gone - which means you wouldn't be capable of posting on here by the time the insomnia set in. By that time you wouldn't be able to speak, write, eat or move. That doesn't describe your current state, does it?

We all go through phases when we can't sleep occasionally, and we all get anxious about our health at your age. Put this out of your mind. Now you've got into the habit of not sleeping you'll have a few more sleepless nights, simply due to anxiety, but this will all sort itself out very soon and you'll be back to sleeping normally again.

Are you stressed for some reason? Teens have a lot going on in those years and sometimes you will have problems sleeping. Keep active, exercise daily, eat well, no caffeine after 5PM, go to sleep and wake up about same time and if unable to sleep get up and rest in a comfortable chair out of the bedroom.  Don't watch tv or play on phone or computer. Listen to soft music or just meditate a bit until you feel sleepy and then go back to bed. You should get better. Good luck

Forgot to say it was a panic attack that started it.
