Fear of Achilles tear

hey guys. i am a hypocondriac and i might seem very irrational but im just in a very bad funk because of my fears right now. so recently ive been expiriencing some ankle pain. on the sides of my ankle and near the achilles area. it lasts for about a couple of seconds. it comes and goes and it doesnt stop me from walking or moving at all. i would rate the pain about a 2 out of 10 at most. i talked to a physical therapist and says that its nothing to worry about but for some reason im still very scared to play basketball. i just fear that i am going to rupture my achilles because i see nba players recently suffer from the injury and it just really messes with my mind. i am 20 years old and i know it happens more commonly in older people but i just am so scared. sorry if i sound all over the place.

Hi. Honestly, it sounds like a strain. To keep it from getting worse, stretch it well pre and post playing. The Achilles tendon is the strongest tendon in the body and it takes huge sudden trauma or professional playing to cause serious damage. But as always, any further issues, ask your dr to look at it. Hope this helps. Melissa x

for a strain would it be sensitive to touch? because i can touch it and put hand pressure on it and it doesnt hurt

if it's deep, no it wouldn't cause surface pain. There are many things that can go wrong in the ankle such as inflammation, small stress fractures etc. I think you should mention it ti your GP and see what he/she advises

I ruptured my achilles tendon. I was put in a plaster cast for 6 weeks then a special boot where the ratchet was turned every couple of weeks until my foot was level with the ground. I also had an fhl transfer which is cutting one of the tendons from my big toe and drilling and attaching it to my heal. I was told that in the healing process I would get some nerve pain as nerves would be repairing. I am wondering if this is the case with you. Also I did experience ankle pain. it is still best to check worth your consultant. Are you in a plaster cast and was it operated on?

hi Ryan,
Im 70 and ruptured my achilles 15 months ago and healed up nice and strong.
I suffered from achilles tears whilst cross country running in my twenties and wonder if these tears had weakened my achilles and hence the rupture.
In your case and as basket ball is one of the main causes of achilles ruptures I would perhaps consider another less demanding sport. It wouldnt be the end of the world. But if you want to keep playing then keeping your weight down might reduce the risk.

Ruptured my Achillies aged 50, light running, was a progressive injury over years until the day it went, gentle push off to run and it went.
Doesn't have to be high impact...I'm proof.
FHL transfer, all sorted.
You can worry but if it's gonna happen it's gonna happen. Whether playing basketball or stepping off the pavement.
Enjoy your game.... life's to short to worry about everything.
