Fed up

I had surgery for the drainage of an abscess. It was a large abscess which was extremely painful. I was admitted to hospital as an emergency and had surgery to drain the abscess. The wound was left open to heal and I have been attending the hospital on a daily basis to have the wound packed and the dressing changed.

After 4 weeks  the nurse packing my wound told me although it is almost healed on the outside, there is still a 2cm depth inside the wound and that the outside was healing faster than the inside. She said if the wound closes too early I will be left with a pocket which could cause the abscess to re-occur.

She called a consultant who examined my wound (ouch) and he said I have to come in for further surgery under anaesthetic to open the wound up as the opening was too small, so packing can be inserted and also to examine the wound to check for 'tracking'.

That was on Friday and I was booked in on the Monday, I had the procedure done and the original incision was like a cross shape measuring 1.2cm by 2cm, it is now 2cm by 3cm! Hurts more than last time... More packing going in and the depth is now 1cm more! Bled quite heavy afterwards!

Is this the usual incision shape for drainage it's like a ''+'' shape incision.

The are using aquacel to pack it, is it ok to leave the packing in overnight - if i do it has a funny smell to it on removel. Urgh! is this ok as when I had the surgery on Monday they used alginate rope to pack it.

SOre at mo - not been given antibiotics..

Still having it packed everyday - was every other day but it healed too quick on outside.

When should I have baths - i was having two a day but i have packing changed at 10am in morn so i have been having one at about 9am and one at 8pm but the night one makes my packing come out - is that ok?

I didn't have baths till I was practicly healed

Myn took from March.. Packed every day.. To 2 month ago so like 6 month

The started having showers were was showering the wound after that.. But while a was getting packed etc.. I didn't get the wound wet once.. Was just letting the district nurses clean wound when they were repackin me

I wouldn't be going in baths while u have a big open wound still Incase u bled a lot, just one time when I was getting repacked I got rushed to hospital cos the nurse couldn't stop the bleeding ..

I'm only speaking from my experience though my advice would be..

Once your packed, just go get comfy at home, don't worry about a bath before etc cos ur risking something happening like it starting to bleed bad and it's night time and will be a nightmare for u etc getting to hospital, bad enough during the day isn't it etc

I used 'aquacel' and 'sorbasan silver'

They varied cos they (consultant)didn't know what caused the big bleed I had..may have been the aquacel a bit to tough .. But the nurses say it won't of been the packing it will of just happened what ever packing I was using etc

It always best to use either of the two I mentioned there cos there lined with silver which draws infection out..

Hope I've give u info u needed smile

      Thanks very much!!

After both my ops the amount of bleeding was really worrying, not been checked for anaemia, I feel rather cold and chilly of late so might be worth me getting checked out.

I'm going to mention the 'sorbasan silver' to the nurse tomorrow. Thnaks so much for replying to me

Sorbasan silver is like aquacel but softer on the wound .. Only downfall, not as absorbent..

Another thing I had to get was 'kaltozat' and that was just for an emergency after I had that bad bleed .. It's for when it bleeds really bad , as emergency quickness for nurse

They can put that on wound and it closes the blood vessels

Just keep that at your home as a precaution

I hope I'm not scaring u, just trying to help u so your prepared so no one has to go thru the nightmares I had smile no needs to say thanks for replying message me any time , will give advice when I can smile
