Fed up of being told its nothing!

im fed up of being asked what is wrong with me and then being told 'oh, I've got that' then when you ask what meds they take, or what rheumatologist they go to, you find its not R A at all or they've diagnosed themselves. When I think of the misery and pain I've gone through in the last few years it's almost as though they are dismissing it as nothing.

    Hi Mary

People are very dismissive and just not sympathetic. They think that it is a touch of arthritis or why don't you shut up everyone has joint pains! I saw an interesting blog recently of RA vs Psoriatic arthritis . The man said he had extremely painful hands but very little swelling another patient had badly deformed hands with no pain. It seems we come in all shapes and sizes. I sometimes think the Rheumatologist does not believe me because I do not have big swollen joints or when they check for tenderness they touch the joint like a feather. I can just say I am in pain now with my right hand and all at the back of the hand across the knuckles and the wrist. I have come to bandaging the hand up for relief. Have you any thoughts?

Hi Serge, I feel for you, maybe you need to see another Rheumatologist with more sympathy. I am lucky to have a great specialist that I can ring anytime I have pain and she skypes me with a solution. I am seeing her next week so she can give me a cortisone injection into my left wrist. I am on Hydroxicloroquine every day and Cimzis injections every fortnight but it's sometimes not enough if I get a flare up. I know what you mean about bandaging, I have wrist supports, elbow supports and ankle supports and they do help.

good luck with it all and I hope you get the help you need. Mary

I have often wondered if wrist supports would help with the pain I get sometimes. Can you tell me if it is worth it?

Yes he is the silent type. I don't like to ask so I don't even know the dose of my last steroid depot. Guess what I am a GP.

I find the wrist support helps but I've got the ones with a bar down the front of the support and they are restricting. I've been told stretchy sports straps maybe enough but not tried them yet.

its amazing what happens when your the patient instead of the Doctor, al your training goes out the window! Do what we laymen do and write down the things you need to ask him, or better yet get a specialist who is more receptive, they are out there. On the positive side this could also make you a more understanding GP. Good luck. Mary

Hi Mary, when my wrist begin to hurt or become kinda tender I wear wrist supports. I find if I don't move my wrist when it is painful usually in a few days things get better.  I also use thumb supports.  When my hands are sore or sore and kinda stiff Ihave a pair of battery operated gloves that massage my hands and help along with the ice packs. Hope this helps

Battery operated gloves? I've never heard of these. Where do you get them please?

Sorry Ruth, my answer got held up. If u want to know where the gloves came from just send me a private message. Jo

im the same, it's the turning/twisting motion of my left wrist (I'm left handed too) makes me feel like my wrist is going to break and if I can keep it straight for a few days it does feel stronger, same with my ankles.
