Feel like I’m dying when falling asleep

Hi everyone, I was diagnosed in 2017 with CFS after having glandular fever in 2016. I've found it difficult to get my sleep pattern in order because I cant seem to manage staying awake more than 12hours, I'm usually completely shattered after 6-8hours. Anyway, every time i struggle to get some sort of good pattern going when I'm falling asleep i feel like I'm dying and it terrifies me. So I try to stay awake a bit longer. I Just wondered if anyone else gets this?

Hey, I've had the same falling asleep shock episodes, I had one last night and it scared me a lot. Has anyone found a reason or explanation for it happening? I wasn't dehydrated or stressed. I was a bit 'wired but tired' maybe that was the problem. Would be great to hear from anyone who's found how to prevent it or explain it. Thanks

I have been having the same symptoms for 2 years!! I have been keeping a log and I believe its definitely hormonal! It happens every month the day before ovulation and then every 2nd day approx a week before my period starts. I have had sleep studies done and have ruled out sleep apnea (I have apnea very mild).

I have seen Kinesiologist, Naturopath, Acupuncture, GP but noone can seem to help. Thinking i need to see an endocronologist? But just not sure if they will be able to help, it seems a mystery.

this has just started happening to me now, I honestly don't know how this is happening. I tried going to sleep and all of a sudden this feeling came across over my body not allowing me to sleep. I put music on to try to calm me down a little bit but it wasn't working and then this fear of dying came into my head and I started stressing and worrying and getting scared, which caused me to stay up longer.

I don't know what is happening and it's starting to play on my mind a lot now, I feel like this will continue from now and I don't know how to feel about it. Words don't describe the feeling when you think your heart is beating so fast and you feel it and it's not. The feeling where your chest is tense and you can't breathe properly, this is a real thing!

I pray that this never happens again.

So relieved reading through these comments. I had no idea what was going on with me, still don't. But good to read it's not just me! I couldn't describe it properly to my husband. It doesn't happen all the time. But when it does, I'm in a relaxed state either watching TV on the couch or going to sleep in bed. It's either zap like sensations from my chest to my head. Happens in a split second. That's when I'm relaxing on couch. When I'm drifting to sleep it's a jolt, a horrible sense of fear that I am about to die. Last night it got so bad I was crying as I was so tired and just wanted to sleep but was terrified I was about to die in my sleep. At the time I think I am having chest pain, but now I am not so sure if it's all in my head as I drift off.. I think I will talk to GP about it but I know I'm not going to be very articulate about it!
