Feel my bottom half heating up. Is it LS or something else?

Hi Everyone,

I went to Metro and Shoppers Drugmart on March 12. On March 15 Sunday, I had my son and his partner over for dinner. I made a spicy chili. The next day, not sure exactly when, I started to feel my abdomen heating up. Two days later I had some chili and got that feeling again -- feeling weird and heating up so I assumed it was the chili with all the spices. And it also seemed to affect my passing urine at times.

I have LS and hypothyroidism. I am 79 years old. I thought it might be a UTI but I've had that once before and I was in doubling-over pain. I'm not in pain, just feel my bottom half heating up. It comes and goes. It's always there, but like coming in waves.

I don't have a cough but I do cough sometimes but that might be caused by the Simbrazin eye drops that I apply for glaucoma. I don't have a fever that I can see when touching my forehead. I ordered a thermometer because mine is out of order but I will only be getting it anytime between April 1 to April 10.

I don't want to go to a Walk-in Clinic, although my doctor is part of one, because I might catch the virus if I don't have it, but maybe I do have it. I don't know, although I just read the symptoms and I don't have that. Could the stress of this virus make the LS burn the whole bottom front below the belly button? I've never had much burning sensation with my LS before -- only itching.

Just wondering if maybe there's something else happening.

Thank you for any help.

    Hi Michelle,

Sorry to hear you are going through this! Do you think the burning sensation could be from the spicy food? I think there are women with LS who have said that they felt irritated with spicy food. Do you normally eat spicy food?

I know that stress is definitely a factor for LS flare-ups. I actually usually don't get a burning sensation either but I have been feeling it with the stress of everything.

I would say because of your age, I would not go to a walk-in clinic during this time. Try to record your symptoms and see if there is a pattern when you get this wave of symptoms. Try taking a sitz bath and doing some deep breathing/meditation/relaxation.

I believe this should pass- I am sorry you are going through this.

    Sending hugs,

    -Nicole

      Hi Nicole,

Thank you for your response. It's very comforting to hear from someone with your kind words and I'm not alone. Spicy food have never bothered me before. That's why I found this odd, so of course, I thought I might have the virus, so that stressed me more to no end. Like a vicious circle. But when I investigated I am red as a beet down there, so that's what it is I think. That is a great relief to me that I don't have to go at this time to the Clinic since it's obvious that it's the LS that's giving me all the heat. As I've never experienced the burning before, I was surprised that you feel it through your whole abdomen. Is it the spicy food? Not sure anymore. Or is it stress. Next time I eat some I'll see. I have been very stressed over this virus. And it's not easy for a senior to be left alone in isolation that's for sure. Thank you so much. This really helped me to calm down. I'm thinking of soaking with some baking soda in a tub. I'll see if that does anything. If anyone has other ideas, please let me know.

Hugs back to you, my angel.

      Hi micheline,

It sounds to me like you already felt the symptoms related to eating the chilli so I'd go with what you feel your body is communicating to you.

For me my LS symptoms have always been burning, not itching. I have found myself naturally ceasing eating spicy foods but am not sure how much difference it makes. There are so many variables to take into consideration but they all seem to relate to stress and anxiety which also relates to the type of foods I choose to eat ... the stress is key as you have identified and good on you for reaching out. You are not alone even of you may feel like it sometimes xx

      Hi Suzanne,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I think you're right. They are all inter-related I think. If you are stressed and anxious and you eat spicy food and you have LS, I've come down to the stress being the culprit. Mind you, at my age I should reconsider eating spicy foods and try to maybe make the food milder or stop altogether. I don't think it was caused by the chili itself alone, as this was happening days passed the chili, so like you say the stress is key. My soak in the tub last night with baking soda did a world of good. Most of the redness is now gone down there. It's strange though, I'm still heating up a bit now as I'm writing but that may be because I'm still a little bit stressed and overly conscious now of the heat. It's enough to be stressed though. Many people are dying from this virus. I have to go and get my eye checked sometime in April and I hope it's clear then to be able to go out. Thank goodness for the Internet and people like you guys. Can't imagine going through this being in the age before this technology and not being to communicate to anyone. Thank you for your support. Good to know I'm not alone.

      Hi Nicole,

Yes your post really helped me to relax and it did calm me down a lot. Most of the redness has now gone. Never saw it that red before. I'm still heating up a bit but like I said in the other post, I am still a bit stressed about what's going on about the virus. Terrible as families are being pulled apart in fear. I can't see my son.

I think I'll have another soak tonight with baking soda and try to relax. By the way, I don't really know how to meditate. I've always wondered. How do you do that? It's always intrigued me.

      Thanks Nicole.
