Feel restless when trying to sleep

Hi guys, I am a 25 year old male and a little bit unsure of what to do. For the last few nights It has been really difficult for me to relax and go to sleep. Sometimes it can take me hours and leaves me feeling sleepy throughtout the next day. This is something that has only started reoccurring recently in the last couple of months and usually sleeping has never been a problem for me. Obviously, there are a few issues in my life that may have some reason for my problems. Firstly, my social life has been non-existent and I am spending a lot of time stuck in, so as a result, it becomes difficult for me to burn energy. I am quite an energetic person. Secondly, one of my biggest worries is not finding any work as I have been unemployed for a year and three months now, making me feel really downhearted and destroying my confidence. Lastly, I do suffer with anxiety and I suppose this could be a main reason too. What I am hoping to hear is a bit of reassurance of what I can do to stop these issues and if people are in the same situation of me. What have they done to conquer it or any tips to help get a good nights sleep. It is starting to worry me now and I don't want my life to be affected especially being so young.

Don't let it go on, your brain will form a habit of "this is normal" over the counter sleeping tablets ( which are just antihistamines') are very good at knocking you out and keeping you asleep, a few nights is usually enough to break the cycle. If these don't work you must see a Dr for your anxiety. In the meantime, cut all caffine out as that makes anxiety worse, get out in the fresh air once a day for a good walk, exercise, daylight and fresh air are really good for the brain, especially daylight as it makes the sleep/wake hormones work properly in your brain. Don't use your phone or ipad ect too close to going to bed. When you go to bed don't lay there too long stressing that your not going to sleep, get up and out of your bedroom and read, magazine, book newspapers anything, no tv or phone ect and stay up untill your sleepy enough to go back to bed. These all work for me. Good luck.

I have been like you all my adult life,(  Anxiety) even as I have a good secure job now. Without  making it into rocket science some people worry more than others.  What I did is get a good lightweight pair of cordless bluetooth headphones (don't have to be expensive),   And I listen to podcasts (from cellphone or tablet) . (Or Internet  talk radio- tons of apps). Some examples of stuff that I listen to is " Things you should know- random informative podcasts that  tell you eg. Fusion versus fision  , how things work , politics , economics, biographies.  Etc. You can even find hypnotizing recordings that are suppose to give you confidence, help  you lose weight... Etc.  one thing for sure, they all start off and put me to sleep for sure, As long as it keeps you from thinking of problems in life, it will work. (Especially if it's boring, !) hope this helps.

Hi oaksi sorry to hear you're having sleep problems.  It seems that there are several reasons to me.  Firstly I would suggest getting out for a walk, it doesn't cost anything and it's amazing what a good brisk walk in the fresh air can do.  Secondly have you tried meditation?  It can be difficult at first but if you set yourself a realistic target of only sitting quietly for 5 minutes you can build up your time without becoming disillusioned.  Try counting your breath, breathe in for 1 hold the breath then breathe out for 1, breathe in for 2, hold breathe out for 2... carry on unitl you reach 10.  If you lose count go back to one. This helps focus the mind and empty it of other 'junk'.  Have you tried a total body relaxation whilst laying in bed.  Visualise all you muscles relaxing and melting, softening into relaxation and sleep.  Start at your head and work down to your toes. Sometimes it helps to tense the muscle first so you feel the relaxed state more.  I have many other ways I use, if you're interested you can PM me.... don't want to drone on in case it's not for you.  Good luck biggrin
