Feel worse before I feel better?

I've been on amitriptyline 10 mg a week now for functional dyspepsia. I know it probably hasn't kicked in yet, but I feel worse. How long until I feel better? Dr says to increase to 20 mg. Any advice is appreciated.

I personally would give it around 2-4 weeks to feel the benefit but if your GP recommends increasing then go with what he or she suggests. I had been on and off amitriptyline for a while (I'm now completely off them) and I noticed an increased difficulty swallowing and indigestion, I always felt like food was getting stuck in my throat, this was whilst on one of the "breaks" I had and that was after being on 10mg so that dose could be enough for you it may just need time

Hmm... that's why I'm taking it, for indigestion and lump in throat feeling. I would rather not be on any medication at all but feel like I'm at my wits end with these symptoms. Thank you for your reply.

    Hi

I havent taken amitriptyline for that but for pain, I started with 10mg for a week then upped the dose to 20mg it almost kicked in straight away, so I should increase your dose, when you feel its helped you can always try reducing it, I only take 10mg and the pain hasnt returned if it does I will just go back to 20mg.

    Hope this helps

thank you. I think I'll do 10 mg for another week, then increase it.

ok pleased to help you, they are very good for many things, and a low dose no side effects.

i have been on 25 ml of amitriptyline for 2 1/2 wks for headaches and neck pain . I have been feeling so much better and headaches are gone . I think they were maybe tension headaches and the low dose is enough to relax.

Give it more time. If you don't feel better on 20mg tell your PMD you want to try something else.
