feeling a bit wooden still following 2x THR

Hi

I am 22 weeks post op my second thru, the first was February 2017. I am now feeling the benefits of my hip replacements and walking, swimming and cycling are all going well. I have decided not to return to running or other impactful sports as I am 52yrs old and want to try to delay the inevitable revisions as long as possible.

I was signed off by the physio at 6 weeks post op and feel like I could benefit from further physio.  the things I am still struggling with are things like bend to pick something up or tying shoelaces or getting up and down from the floor.

. I need advice on identifying which muscles need targetting and whether I would benefit from stretching exercises and pilates. I was always limited in my range of movement by perthes but hoped to gain a greater range of hip flexion with my new hips

any advice on this or on how to locate a good private physio with THR experience will be gratefully received

paul.

Gusss you are in the UK as you say physio not PT. if you say where you are someone here may recommend a physio otherwise you will have to phone the practice and ask if there is someone with a particullar interest in THR.. i was told no running, jumping (especially out of planes) or omact movement ever, but I am 74 . It is  just over a year now since THR. For bending it will still help if you put the op leg out to the back- eventually you will find you do it normally without thinking. Shoe laces - sit down and put the foot on a small step stool or pouffee- it it s the leg muscles I find that are weak at holding the leg up. If you are standng then put the foot on a low chair etc.Getting up and down from the floor is easiest done froma kneeling position but i still hold on to something whilst getting up

Paul, I'm only eight weeks out, but I'm struggling with the same issues. Even if I put my foot up on a small stool, my hips are too stiff to reach down to tie shoes, dry between toes after a shower, etc. My PT said that it would just take time, but as you are at 22 weeks with the same problem I'm wondering if that is true! Also getting up and down from the floor is a struggle and I find that I have to use my arms a lot in order to get up off the floor. I hope that someone comes along with some answers and gives us both hope for further improvement.

Hi Paul, I was lucky enough to be offered a lower limb course by my physios. NHS hospital. It was 6 weeks but I ended up with 8 weeks due to low numbers. It was brill as you always had physio in the gym with you. Used static bike, wobble board and strengthening exercises using the therabands plus exercises laying on bed. In regards to bending I still stick my leg out behind me and I'm 25mnths post op. Tying shoelaces was difficult. I used to put foot on stairs and lean to the opposite side to tie them. My Osteopath helped me a great deal. What part of the country are you in?

Hi Paul, I’m pleased that your walking and swimming and cycling are going well.  Like you, I was advised not to run any more, so I’m swimming a couple of times a week. Mostly it’s ok, but if I swim too far, like a mile, my hip reminds me that it’s still there! I’m 15 months post op, and people do say that it can take 18 months to 2 years  to recover completely. You are only 22 weeks out so maybe just take things steadily. your range of movements should keep improving.

Wishing you all the best, Judith

Hi Paul, Also was going to say, could the hospital recommend a good physio, or your gp maybe?

      Good luck

      Thanks Judith

I am aware that further improvements hopefully will happen over the next 6-12 months. I can see from the shape of my rear that I do still have some muscle to build in the scar areas and looking to get some expert advice on targetting these. Overall superhappy with my progress - I even had a gorgeous autumn day rock climbing with my son in the peak district yesterday . Something I was sure I would never be able to do again.

      best wishes paul

    hi Paul,

good to see you back here and how well you are doing ... Amazing right ?  2 new hips !!! yeah ..

Now we have to be patient for them to integrate in to the rest of our body -- Not only our physical body but also our brain ...

Right now and for some time coming we have the odd connection to new joints, the nerves take time to repave the way to the brain. It has no connection at first implanted until our brains catch up to the new movement and new signals sent by our bodies to the brain.

Great tips on how to bend forward and tie shoelaces --

Unfortunately I had to give up on physical therapists here in my village and now have neuromuscular massages - Painful at first but getting better and better with each treatment -- I have a lot more confidence and I swear I am taller now ...

    big warm hug

    renee

Hi Paul, I've no advice but I am impressed that you are back to cycling, swimming etc after 2 replacements. I am 52 also and had my right hip replaced last Thursday. Can't wait to get back to exercise again. It's good to hear that other people have managed it! Hope you get the advice you are looking for regarding physio.
